We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kalah Crawford. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kalah below.
Kalah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kalah and I have been in the business of art since 2017. I was able to understand and embrace my creativity when I decided to use my painting as a form of expression and noticed they spoke to a wider audience outside of myself. Some of my first pieces were created using nail polish because I didn’t have any paint at the time. I began to develop as an artist two years later when I started to really research techniques, learn by way of talented mentors, and step outside of my comfort zone by tackling larger and more complex projects. When I started to complete portraits and murals, I understood the importance of “storytelling”. Furthermore, I became conscious of the impact my artwork could have on people and the message I wanted to deliver to the eyes of the people it grasps.
Most of the portraits I have been asked to do are ones that commemorate those that are no longer with us, whether it has been through suicide, domestic violence, or natural causes. I utilize the opportunity to capture moments that bring peace and joy to family and friends. I have also worked on portraits that tell stories of hard times and joyous times.
In the past five years, I have developed a love and patience for murals. I don’t try to “throw” murals on the wall to just fill space, I intentionally place murals on the wall to fill hearts, minds, and souls with knowledge, compassion, inspiration, motivation, faith and hope. Murals are currently my favorite projects to work on. More specifically, murals in places that house youth that could use some extra motivation and hope such as DJJ, DJJ and DSS affiliates, and schools.
I think this is what sets me apart, I’m not concerned with my following base or trying to go viral, I’m focused on impacting the lives of those that need to be heard, seen, and given opportunities to grow through their mistakes. If I can change one life through each mural or painting, then I have been able to achieve what I’ve been called to do.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to create conversations with other people without having to be present. It is true that our eyes can see the same thing yet view something completely different. Our experiences mold our views. I love that what I may intend to display through my art may be the complete opposite of what people may see. Listening to others discuss their individuals views on pieces are my favorite type of conversations but also knowing those conversations happen without an artist being present is exciting. It’s the collection of thoughts and knowledge through strangers conversing that is rewarding.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The only mission I have as an artist is to complete every piece of work in a way that brings light to others so they understand that I’m appreciative of the blessing I’ve been given and my goal is to continuously share that with others.
