Kajal, appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
A friend of mine referred her friend to me. She was having a wedding and needed a henna artist for her guests. I was so nervous since it was My first time working on so many people. My henna designs weren’t that great but practice makes perfect. Before the event, I researched what other henna artist charge for parties and I found out they charge an hourly rate. I was charging less than most henna artists because I felt guilty of charging people.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I have always been into art and doing creative things since I was a kid. I started doing henna in 2015 practicing on myself, my family and friends. A year later, someone told me I should start a business out of it. At the time, I wasn’t that confident so I just did it as a hobby for a while and then when I was comfortable, I started a business out of it.
Alot of people think henna is only done at South Asian weddings but in all these years being a henna artist, I have worked at birthday parties, Bridal showers, quinceneras, bat mitzvahs, etc.
I also do digital art, microblading eyebrows and making tshirts and tumblers. I try to find different way to create something.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built up my social media presence by trying to get my name out there. Most of the time it’s word of mouth by friends of friends or family members. I do alot of pop up events as well and I tell people to Tag and follow my social media.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being a henna artist is that I get to work at so many different events. I’ve met so many amazing people. I have done fundraisers and charity events. I love to give back. So I do make tshirts for charities and I try to come up with different creative ways to help out.
