Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Tilghman
Hi Kaitlyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I always loved music. Who doesn’t, right? Music brings people together.
When I was in high school I took an internship as an assistant band director for school credit. I learned that my passion for music was only second to inspiring others to find joy. Music has always been a tool for uncovering different aspects of life including creativity, self-awareness, meditation, and building discipline and patience as well. I enjoyed helping others uncover what music could bring to their lives, so I started offering private music lessons and hosting community music classes in the park.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business takes a lot of work. It’s a lot of trial and error. I sought out business mentors. Made connections with local schools. Offered free coaching and services. Overtime, my dedication paid off. I went from teaching a couple of students at of their homes or in a local park to overseeing multiple teachers and students internationally.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Tilghman’s Academy of Music is a family owned music academy made for families. My husband, Chris, and I started this music school originally in California. We have since moved to South Dakota where we now run the only music school and shop in our town. We also offer private music lessons virtually to students around the US and internationally as well.
Besides our variety of teachers and services, we offer students a sense of community through our worldwide musical family. Every year we release a student recorded album featuring our students from all over. We collect recordings and mix and master them all. Our students feel proud to share these with their friends and family near and far. After our very first album release, we received over 1,000 views in the first day of our release. It was such a success, that we kept releasing more albums. Students have been drawn to us remotely for these kinds of experiences that we offer.
What were you like growing up?
You know when you get asked that question as a young child, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
I remember back in kindergarten I answered my teacher, “Everything!” I always wanted to experience all that I could. I feel like I have accomplished that being an entrepreneur, musician, teacher, and mother. Music has a way of creating all kinds of experiences and teaching the history and techniques of music has helped me share those experiences with others.
