We were lucky to catch up with Kaitlyn McColez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kaitlyn , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I’m hoping that with the hard work and dedication that I’ve put into Fatty K’s will continue to grow into hopefully my own family owned store front that my daughters can one day take over and run.
I want to be remembered for the dedication and drive that I have and of course the delicious desserts I make. Hopefully people will talk about their favorite treat they gotten or their experience they had with me.

Kaitlyn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a small business/bakery owner who got my start over the covid pandemic. I specialize in gourmet cookies and brownies.
Growing up, my passion was always baking and being in the kitchen learning as much as possible from my great aunts. That passion led me down the path to culinary arts school where I gained more knowledge, experience, and the discipline that I’ve thankfully been able to use today.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Fun fact: Fatty K’s was just for fun at first. I was bored at home with literally nothing to do or places to go because of the pandemic so I started to play around with baking.
I started off making chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cookies stuffed with a peanut butter cup(to die for 🤤). I posted them on my Snapchat story. A few people were interested in them and said I should try selling them. After a few hit and misses on pricing, things started to take off. It was slow but steady at first, but just enough to keep my flame lit to keep going.
Over the past few years, word of mouth, and social media, Fatty K’s has went from side hustle to a main source of income and I couldn’t be more thankful!

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
For building new clients/ customers I definitely rely on a few different things.
One way is word of mouth from past and repeat customers. Word of mouth is the most effective way to reach new people. If one customer enjoys what I make and tells someone else about it, chances are that they are going to try it as well.
Another way is social media and pictures. Everyone loves seeing exactly what they are buying, so I try my best to post pictures of my desserts that are currently available.
The last one is possibly my favorite way to reach new customers and that’s attending Markets and having a booth set up. This way people can ask me questions in person, chit chat about things, and see what all we have!
