Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kaitlyn Kohler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kaitlyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents gave me the space to grow creatively, and encouraged me and my passion throughout my childhood. When I expressed that I wanted to pursue music professionally, everyone asked if I had a back up plan, if there was something else I’d rather do instead, how hard it is to be successful in that field. My parents believed in me when no one else did, and my dad was the one to push me to do it. As I mentioned, I had an extreme anxiety disorder, and everything I struggled with surrounding the job, even singing in front of people in the beginning, he helped push me through. Even during the times I wanted to give up, he never let me quit. If it weren’t for him, I do not believe I would have pursued music at all, and I would not be where I am today.

Kaitlyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kaitlyn Kohler, and I am a Country singer/songwriter.
I first felt called into music in high school, and I’ve followed that path since then. I worked on a music degree in college and then left to pursue it professionally full time.
I’ve been releasing music to the Texas Country charts for the last four years and have had some success there with two singles making #1 and two others landing in the top ten. We’re now looking to expand outside of Texas, and my latest single ranked #55 on Music Row in Nashville, making me the 11th most played independent artist on the chart, which is incredible for a first time song. It truly means a lot to me that my music has been so well received so far.
I struggled with a severe anxiety disorder for most of my life, and when I felt God calling me into a very visible position I knew that I couldn’t do it; everything that being a musician entailed were things that I actively avoided and feared. That was when God told me ‘I know you can’t, but I can, and that is the point’.
My goal with my music is to be a light to as many people as I can, and show people who may be struggling with similar issues that if I can push through my anxieties and pursue my dream, they can too.
Music, to me, is about connection, and if I can write a song that at least one person connects to, then I’ve succeeded.
My team and I are working very hard to expand my music to more and more listeners, and I hope that I can leave a positive impact in as many people’s lives as I can.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Utilizing social media. It seems like such an obvious thing, but it is not as easy as it looks. The mediasphere has shifted for everyone, but especially for artists and musicians. With music production being more accessible than ever, it’s important to find a way to make yourself stand out. Finding a clothing, hair, jewelry, aesthetic style that is unique and making it your ‘brand’ will give viewers an overall image of who you are and what you’re about. When you post, study the analytics, see what time of day gets you the most engagement, which hashtags work best, what type of your content are people most connecting with- is it your cover songs, your life updates, etc. Study other content creators as well, see what their audience is most engaging in, and use what you learn to improve your content. Use the algorithms to your advantage, make sure your content is of good quality, and post consistently. Don’t underestimate platforms like TikTok; having some content that is unique to each app will also encourage viewers to check out your profiles on different platforms. I am just now learning and starting to take advantage of these things, but in the short time that I’ve applied it I’ve already seen a decent amount of growth.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The impact that I’ve seen my music make on people. I’ve had more people reach out to me to let me know how my music has touched them than I have doing anything else throughout my life. In the hard times and when it seems like things aren’t going to work out, it never fails that someone will let me know how much they appreciate what I’m doing, or how much they enjoy it, and I use that as motivation to keep going. It means the world to me, and it solidifies that I’m doing what I was meant to do.
If you are truly passionate about your work, people will notice, and people will care. Let that be what keeps you moving forward.
