We were lucky to catch up with Kaitlyn Johnston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kaitlyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Throughout my career, I’ve held various positions, but none truly fulfilled me; there was always something missing. I never found satisfaction in conventional jobs, but now, as a tattoo artist, I have discovered a profound sense of contentment. This profession allows me to exercise my creativity and enjoy my work, providing the perfect balance of artistic freedom and personal satisfaction.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kaitlyn, and I am a 25-year-old tattoo artist based in San Antonio, TX. I have been working at MasterMinds Tattoo for nearly six years. My journey began when I was employed at a coffee shop, where the owner of MasterMinds, along with his wife, were regular customers. As I got to know them, I learned about their business. When I visited the shop for a tattoo, I shared some of my drawings with Kika, the owner, as I have always been passionate about art. Impressed by my work, he offered me an apprenticeship, which I eagerly accepted.
Over the years, I have faced numerous challenges, ranging from difficult coworkers to demanding clients, but I always do my best to work with my clients and strive to give them the work they are wanting. However, I believe my precise line work sets me apart. Many clients have praised the accuracy of my lines, which I consider the backbone of any great tattoo. While I specialize in fine line tattoos, I am proficient in various other styles as well. As a young artist, I am committed to continuous learning and improving my craft.
At MasterMinds Tattoo, I have worked diligently to create a welcoming atmosphere in my tattoo area. It is important to me that my clients feel comfortable and at ease during their sessions.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of my career is the ability to earn a living while pursuing something I am truly passionate about. What is a dream for many has become a reality for me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to combine my love for art with my profession.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I spent five years working in retail, where the mantra “the customer is always right” was deeply ingrained. However, this principle does not always apply in the field of tattooing. I had to learn that some of the ideas clients bring in are not suitable for tattoos. It was challenging to develop the confidence to speak up and advise them on what would and would not work.
While I always strive to fulfill my clients’ wishes, my priority is to ensure that the tattoos they receive will stand the test of time. For instance, finger tattoos are popular, but they do not hold up well due to constant exfoliation and the frequent use of our hands. I make it a point to inform my clients that finger tattoos tend to fade and expand over time, and it took me some time to become comfortable with advising against them.
