Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kaitlyn Hubbard. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kaitlyn, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
Being in the film industry exposes me to all different kinds of people with different backgrounds, skill sets and knowledge. I am typically a shy person, but if I could go back in time and start over, I would make the effort to jump right in and get to know people in different departments. Ask questions, learn what their creative process is and what their work ethic is like. Knowing these things makes my job as a Producer’s Assistant/Associate Producer a little easier as we work through the preparation and production stages of making a movie.

Kaitlyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with television. As I was starting out college in my hometown taking the core classes, I had to make a decision of what I really wanted to do with my life and it always came back to: I want to work in television. So, I applied to my one dream school and made a wish that I got accepted because I had no backup plan. Months later, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia and began my classes at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) as a Film and Television student. About two years into my program, the world shut down due to COVID-19. I was back home and finishing up my film degree from my bedroom in Augusta, GA. Luckily, I was able to get a job as an Associate Producer at a local news station where I ended up working for over a year.
After graduating and getting what I could out of local news, my step-dad, who happens to be a Producer, finally encouraged me to start working for him as his assistant. I was hesitant at first, but I knew that it was the right step to take. Working beside him has taught me so much more than I ever could have imagined and we discovered that we make a really solid team, which is why we are still working together today.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love being apart of the process of reading the script for the first time all the way through watching the final cut of the film. All of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes before the camera is even turned on is such a challenge, but a fun one. Collaborating with all of the different departments to make the story come to life is truly a magical experience that I wish people got to see more of.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Be kind. Smile. Encourage others around you and tell them they are doing a good job. People like and NEED to hear it.
