We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaitlyn Handley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaitlyn, thanks for joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me was become my first client and to take a chance on a new trainer. That interaction and client I hold very close to my heart. Without them I would’ve have built the business I thrive in today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kaitlyn and I have grown up on the health and fitness industry. Starting at a young age I was a dancer. Through my dance training I was taught many important lessons on hard work, dedication, promptness, pushing yourself to new limits, healthy mindsets, healthy bodies, how to achieve your goals, and so many more. I took these lessons and went to Utah Valley University to receive my BS in Dance Education. During this time we had to study kinesiology, physiology, anatomy, and other classes about the body and how it works. I FELL IN LOVE learning these things and felt it all came so naturally.
This in turn caused me to explore how I could be a strong, healthy, dancer and encourage others to do the same. I reached out to my own personal trainer to get time there. Through that experience I became very comfortable in exercising, nutrition, and overall how to make changes to focus on longevity of life. This took me to get my own certifications and become a professional in fitness and nutrition.
I am currently certified as the following: NASM CPT | NCEP CPT | TRX Women’s Athlete CPT
NASM Nutrition Coach | NCEP Holistic Nutritionist
My focus and approach on what I do and how I help my clients to reach their goals may be different than most. I want my clients to love the journey just as much as they love who they are becoming. We focus on longevity. We focus on never restricting. We focus on a good relationship with your body and food. We focus together on how to enjoy life and let your body carry you through.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I personally have created such a warm, fun, and honest environment that majority of my clientele has come from word of mouth from myself and other clients. I’ve received some clients from social media as well. However, I personally have never used a “trainer coach” or those people who reach out and can cold call potential clients for you.
I like to receive my clients in an organic way because then you know they are ready to reevaluate their habits and how to change them.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Honesty and loving yourself. Without honesty you aren’t going to be able to build an environment and relationship with a client that can be trusted. Clients have many questions and you need to be able to answer them in an effective manner that is kind but also educational.
If you don’t love yourself how can you expect to teach a client the importance of that? You have to be able to lead by example.
