We were lucky to catch up with Kait Scarano recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kait, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I think so! It depends on the moment and how much weight the word “happy” holds for me that day. The act of creating brings me insurmountable joy, but like Michael J. Fox said, optimism is more sustainable.
I’m one of the long time (see: ancient) content creators that has had years of previous jobs under their belt. So, when I look back on those years, I can draw a fair amount of parallels. Both fields require communication skills, punctuality and focus. Most jobs require a good amount of ingenuity and often creativity, as well.
I would argue that my job as a creative requires more time management mastery than the average day job. I also don’t have mandatory breaks and overtime doesn’t guarantee more pay.
Just like with any corporate or office job, only a portion of my job consists of my artistry. So many operational tasks happen along side the more creative tasks. Thankfully, my management has shouldered some of that burden, but I can say with certainty- my current job is more challenging than any job I’ve previously had.
Kait, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Here are some fun facts about me: I love herb bouquets- like even more than flowers. Saunas are the best way to clear your head. Skincare is one of my favorite quiet rituals. There’s no such thing as “too much blush”. Drape it, baby!
I’ve played with paint since childhood, so transferring to the nearest living canvas was a natural progression. And because faces are so enchanting, I started painting everyone else. I have parents that nurtured my creativity growing up, so I rarely ever second guessed my artistic process. I was brave enough to make mistakes.
My work consists of brand exclusive lip swatches and editorial full face projects. I do still take in-person client work in the city, but my joints appreciate that I’m more focused on working from home.
I just want to be your cool kindergarten art teacher. Discover your favorite colors. Draw outside the lines. Grab the cotton balls and glue. Mix as much glitter as you want. Eat a couple crayons. Be silly. Be free.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
If you nurture a society where people are cared for and have what they need, then art and the appreciation of it will naturally occur. Talk to people you’ve never met. Volunteer locally. Don’t be afraid to get involved in your community. Plant some seeds.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Connecting with others is incredibly rewarding. It’s a wonderful opportunity to have open discussions in a safe space, and hear people’s stories. I’ve learned so much through the kindness and openness of individuals both within and outside of my community. It’s a spring that never dries up.
