We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaiqi Wang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kaiqi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
In a small coal mining town in China, where creativity was a rare find, I ventured into the world of fashion armed with determination and a passion for crafting. I wasn’t exactly an expert, but I enjoyed doodling and experimenting with fashion ideas that might have made Lady Gaga raise an eyebrow or two. Looking back, I realize that my journey could have been smoother if I had sought guidance from a fashion mentor or pursued formal design education. I missed out on those epic moments where I could have learned from a wise mentor while wielding a glue gun. Instead, I faced numerous challenges, more than a track and field competition could offer. I lacked formal training, resources were limited, and there was no artistic community to support me. However, I never gave up; determination became my middle name. I scrounged for materials like a squirrel preparing for winter and learned through a series of trial and error, much like a computer program debugging itself.
My journey eventually led me to “YouTube University,” where I acquired essential skills. I went from struggling with a sewing machine to mastering various hand-sewing techniques. Adaptability, resilience, and a keen eye for aesthetics became my closest allies. I evolved from drawing stick figures to creating haute couture knock-offs, showcasing my adaptability as my proudest trait.
Resilience served as my armor against fashion mishaps, which I faced head-on in the pursuit of progress. I took a leap of faith, leaving behind my double business degree to cross the Pacific Ocean and chase my fashion dreams. Surprisingly, my business background later proved to be an unexpected advantage, giving me a unique edge in the competitive fashion landscape.
Through this journey of stumbling, learning, and crafting, I didn’t emerge as a clueless explorer but as a fashion maven. My story is a testament to the power of determination, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to creativity. It proves that even in the face of scarcity, passion can transform stumbling blocks into stepping stones toward greatness.

Kaiqi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kaiqi Wang, and I am a San Francisco Bay Area-based fashion designer, footwear and accessory designer, makeup artist, stylist, and creative mind. I am here due to a combination of sheer determination, a dash of originality, and a pinch of raw stubbornness. My grandmother, who defied conventions during “The Cultural Revolution,” instilled in me a rebellious spirit and a passion for fashion, despite my origins in a small town with no fashion heritage. In the past, she donned custom-tailored wool pants to make a formal statement about her love of fashion. I suppose being a dissident and fashionista is in my genes! I am creating enchantment with my designs today. Using recycled materials, I design fashion items that are not only incredibly stylish but also environmentally responsible. I like to think of myself as a fashion superhero who battles the forces of waste and monotony!
In my design studio, I experiment with unorthodox materials, add detachable or movable components, and produce ensembles that are not only fashionable but also as customizable as a sub sandwich. While society advises you to conform, my designs encourage you to embrace your individuality and stand out. Who wishes to be a carbon copy of everyone else, anyway? To me, fashion is about celebrating one’s individuality, and I am all about that. My artistic license is limitless; this is my playground and canvas. There are no laws, only creative liberty. My collections are similar to surprise birthday parties in that they are chaotic, unexpected, and magical.
In addition to styling and custom design projects, I also provide consulting and cosmetics services. Problem-solving is analogous to resolving a difficult conundrum, and discovering the optimal solution is as gratifying as discovering the optimal pizza toppings.
What distinguishes me, you ask? In addition to my undeniable charisma and wit (wink, wink), it is my distinct perspective and ability to transform avant-garde concepts into wearable fashion. Imagine clothes that make a statement and protect the environment; it would be like having your cake and consuming it, but in fabulous couture!
I am all about inclusivity and adaptability, eliminating rigid gender distinctions as quickly as your morning coffee evaporates. It is fashion for everyone, regardless of their identity or background. My attire is so versatile that you could wear it to a formal affair or a dance-off with equal panache.
My Chinese ancestry and my love and pride for my culture are the secret ingredient that separates me from all the fantastic fashion designers. Not only do I design clothing, but I also undertake a cultural endeavor. I infuse my Chinese heritage into my designs, blending ancient philosophies and traditional textiles to create a cultural mélange. Fabrics such as brocade and silk are transformed into works of art that proclaim, “I am both timeless and trendy!” It’s like a time-traveling fashionista had tea with Confucius; it’s a combination of old-fashioned elegance and contemporary attitude. The fashion industry is about creativity, rebellion, and expressing your inner fashionista.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
In the realm of fashion, I’m a rule-defier, a trend-twister, and an eco-champion all wrapped up in one chic package. I’ve strutted down the gleaming catwalks of San Francisco Fashion Week, turned global art galleries into my fashion playground, and even found myself gracing the pages of international publications.
My latest collection, “Juxtapose,” was more than just sewing fabric together; it was a celebration of all body types and shapes, a tribute to the beauty inherent in each of us. Crafted from eco-friendly materials and resources, I took second-hand factory leftovers, leather scraps, and fabrics, blending them with modern tailoring and construction techniques to create this utterly unconventional collection. I even took the innovative step of recycling my old braid extensions, transforming them into unique merkins. “Juxtapose” wasn’t merely about looking stunning; it was about making a statement. In my world, fashion isn’t confined to appearances alone; it’s a medium for storytelling, spreading laughter, and, most importantly, contributing to the planet’s preservation, one fabulous outfit at a time.
So, step into my whimsical and stylish adventure, where we are reshaping the fashion industry into a thrilling, sustainable, and entertaining journey.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Sustainable fashion is a constantly evolving field that offers a range of fulfilling opportunities for creative minds. One of the most rewarding aspects is the chance to be a catalyst for positive change. It goes beyond just clothing; it’s a movement that encourages consumers to make mindful choices, considering the environmental and social impacts of their attire. What brings me immense satisfaction is the knowledge that my designs serve not only as fashion statements but also as powerful tools for education. They’re not mere garments; they’re conversation starters. Every piece I create sparks discussions about responsible sourcing, ethical production, and the critical need to reduce waste. The most gratifying moments occur when I see those ‘aha’ expressions on people’s faces as they realize they can look stunning while simultaneously making a positive impact on the world through my sustainable designs.
Sustainable fashion isn’t just about looking good; it’s about putting on a captivating performance. I’m not just sewing fabrics; I’m crafting narratives. My designs aren’t merely clothing; they’re characters in a grand tale of environmental stewardship and conscious consumerism. Picture it as a blockbuster movie where the hero’s cape is made from recycled plastic bottles.
In essence, being a sustainable fashion innovator isn’t just a job; it’s a comedy, a drama, and a thriller all rolled into one. The most fulfilling aspect of being a creative in sustainable fashion is the ability to use artistry as a means to inspire change, educate, and entertain. I’m here to demonstrate that you can strut your stuff, bring smiles to faces, and contribute to saving the planet, all while wearing a show-stopping outfit. Who said fashion couldn’t be humorous, glamorous, and eco-friendly? Clearly, they haven’t had the pleasure of meeting me yet.
The future is indeed promising.
