We recently connected with Kailyn Marcano and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kailyn, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
My journey started when I was working for Harris Teeter in high school. I knew I had the capacity to achieve more, and I set a goal within myself to work as hard as I could to achieve the life I desired. Once I graduated, I decided to leave the company and explore my talents after being absolutely drained from working all the time for minimum wage. I began college and shortly after discovered my passion for the beauty industry. I stumbled upon this passion the first time I received lash extension services and concluded that I wanted to pursue a career in this industry. I then took a lash certification course and began to take clients as a beginner lash technician based out of my dorm room. My services were in such high demand, and my business began to flourish, so I decided to drop out of school and return home. Upon my return to Raleigh, I started out lashing in my mom’s house. This then became too much to manage, so I purchased my first-ever suite space in Knightdale. After making such huge strides in my career, I felt it was time I went to esthetician school to become licensed. I attended The Aveda Institute of Chapel Hill and was able to find a larger suite space during my time in esthetician school. Fast forward, I am now a 6-figure business owner who has her own product line and offers hands-on classes and mentorships for people interested in being an entrepreneur. I love what I do, not only for the money or personal gain but because I have the opportunity to be an influential figure in so many people’s lives.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
A big aspect that matters to me the most is client and customer relationships, because as a woman who loves to receive beauty services as self-care being tailored to and having a connection with your service provider is huge. Businesses that develop long-term relationships with their clients are most likely to be more successful. Trust is important, when you’ve successfully obtained a client relationship trust comes easy. Positivity and happiness spreads to your client and yourself. Having a client relationship helps with rainy days or if you want a shoulder. It’s a comfort space for your client to feel completely comfortable. Clients LOVE to come get their services done because they are looking forward to seeing you and getting slayed.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My journey on building my social media audience was definitely one of the hardships i’ve had within my business. Recently, I jumped from 2k followers to 17k followers in 2 months. My views went from thousands to millions. The advice i can give on building your social media presence is to be authentic with yourself and your brand. Analyze your social media account and know your mission within your business. You must stay consistent, and that will grow your audience entirely. Make sure your you are pushing content out with your face behind your brand, without you there is no brand so make yourself known.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
From working a 9-5 at Harris Teeter everyday, i saved up a bunch of money to put into a savings account. Once i went to college, i came across that a 4 year university was not my cup of tea. I was ready to venture out and become my own boss. Once i got disconnected from school, i invested in a lash course for my lash certification to service eyelashes. My business blew within a year. Years later into servicing, i used my lash funds and invested into a product line for other lash artist & for myself. All of my funds on starting a business were personal funds, whereas you can start a business and grab a loan if need be. My advice is to make sure you have a balance sheet, personal finance statements, cash flow projection, profit/loss production and more. It’s important to stay on top of your funds and what’s going out.
