We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kailee Nauman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kailee below.
Kailee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When I was in college, we were assigned to brand ourselves for our graduation portfolio. I ended up putting out a questionnaire asking those who knew me best to describe me; to my surprise, the word eclectic came up numerous times. I had never even heard of the word! But the description fit me well. I ended up filing “eclectic” into the back of my brain and used only my name for graduation; but when it came to starting my studio, the word “eclectic” just kept coming back to me. I embraced the name and in 2019 rebranded to Eclectic Designs .CO. It’s been a really special evolution of the name, as it captures not just who I am, but also all the clients I work with as well.
Eclectic Definition:
Deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
First, hello, I’m Kailee. I’m a brand & website designer, plus strategist & coach, and I help holistic and spiritual providers feel empowered in their branding so they can show up wholeheartedly, shine in their industry & book more dream clients. I help those I work with from where they are now to reaching their biggest business goals through brand alignment. We take a holistic approach and consider all aspects of work/life and overall well-being. I have found this style to be super unique because, in a sense, it’s life coaching on top of brand development.
Technically, I’ve been doing this for about 11 years; it all started back in high school in my graphic design and yearbook classes. I have always had a deep love for art, so being able to combine my creativity with technology seemed like an ideal fit. Now I’m currently living my best life in the suburbs of Denver, CO and have worked with clients all over the US and world.
I offer brand identity (logo, colors, fonts, plus extra visual elements), brand strategy (the things that help you shine and make more money), website design in Wix or Squarespace, and I also coach about being a real human being running a business (aka taking into consideration life past our passions). My services include a free brand audit challenge, monthly membership, group mastermind, signature offers, and now a brand new program for graphic designers called “The Eclectic Visuals University” with another bold designer in Denver, Tina Floersch. Where we are building a community for designers to come together, learn what being an entrepreneur is for them, and discuss with them, in detail, trade secrets & tips you don’t learn in design school, for example, self care, inclusivity & diversity in design.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
By simply being me…
Can you think of a time where you’ve felt 100% comfortable with who you are? Think about how good it felt to just be YOU in that moment.
Overall, I’ve created a brand that embodies ME and I’m teaching others to do the same so they feel like they can be completely themselves in their business. We can absolutely be the truest versions of ourselves and still run a successful business.
So my reputation is just that: I’m creating an eclectic space for others to come in and feel safe to come as they are, wholeheartedly.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Community vs. Competition
I came from a pretty competitive youth with sports, art contests, honor societies, etc. When I was in college, it was no different: win this design competition, who’s best in class, who had the best portfolio, who gets the job, etc. All of that led up to my business at first.
“How could I be the best designer in my industry and get the most clients?”
Competitive thinking like that is not only exhausting; in many ways for me, it was also toxic.
Overcoming this and bringing in more community has been the biggest lesson. I’ve let go of a lot of my old beliefs and the idea that I have to be anything other than myself. This has helped me attract so many beautiful people into my life. A truly Eclectic Universe.
Those I’ve been able to help, and also watch them grow with their passion, has been one of the most fulfilling parts of having a business. We can all find success together and that’s not through competition, but through community.
