We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kailee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kailee, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?

I would say that I am definitely happier working as a business owner than I was working at a regular job. I enjoy being a business owner because it is such a rewarding experience. I am very passionate about the health and well being of animals. Having my own store allows me to channel that energy in an impactful way by positively affecting my community. It was disheartening to work a regular job in the pet industry because a lot of business owners do not care about the health and well being of the animals, instead solely focusing on making money. Having my own store allows me the freedom to ensure that the pets come first. I only carry products that promote the health and longevity of the pets because they are members of the family deserving to be treated as such.

Sometimes I think that it would be easier to work for someone else. Owning a business is a lot of work and it never stops. There are times when I think that things would be much simpler. I would go to work, do my job, then go home to my pets, but then I think about how unfulling that would be. With my own store, i can make sure that all the animals receive the products that they deserve. My animals are the best part of my life, and they deserve to be treated as such.

My name is Kailee and I am the owner of the Pet Nutrition Center in Carlsbad. We focus on bringing healthy and nutritious diets to all the pets in our community. We have a variety of cat and dog food ranging from raw food to kibble. We enjoy educating the community on the products we carry and why we carry them. If we are ever asked a question that we don’t know the answer to, we will go the extra mile and research it for you.

Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?

Yes, I have bought a business. Actually, the Pet Nutrition Center is the business I bought. I bought the business because I believe that this store has the potential to grow into the store that I dreamed of as a little girl. It has been a lifelong goal of mine to find a way to provide care and education to all the pets and owners around me. Purchasing the business wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. The process was fairly straightforward and we had to get approval to rent the building, approval for a loan, and all the business licenses.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.

Pet Nutrition Center has a loyalty program where you earn points for every purchase. Once you save up to a certain amount of points, you can get dollars off you next purchase. We also have a frequent buyer program (only specific brands participate). We keep track of how many bags of dog food, for example, and once you purchase a specific amount (usually 12 bags) you receive a free bag.
