Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kaidey Baer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kaidey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I actually was interested in esthetics right after high school. I moved to Atlanta and started school that fall. While I was there for a little bit I was questioning if I truly wanted to do esthetics or if it was the school. After a long, hard decision, I decided to not continue with esthetics school and move back home. While I wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to do, I started taking online classes for college. I ended up transferring to university and graduating from Towson in December of 2021 with a BS in psychology and a minor in family studies. Still unsure as to what I wanted to do, I revisited the idea of becoming an esthetician. I looked into local schools in Maryland and found Aveda Institute. After 4 month, I became a state board licensed esthetician. After a year, I have been working as an esthetician. I am currently running my own business within The Jade Collective located in Dundalk. While sometimes I do wonder what my life would be like if I continued school in Atlanta and didn’t go to college, I am glad I chose this path and now have a degree as well as my esthetician license. If I had stayed in Atlanta, I imagine I would be licensed down there and working in my aunts medspa alongside her.

Kaidey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Like I mentioned, my aunt has a medspa in atlanta. She’s been an esthetician for over 20 years and gave me the idea to start a career in the beauty industry. Within my business and the studio I’m at, I have the opportunity to provide many service using my own equipment as well as the equipment provided in house. I offer many services including lash and brows, waxing, spray tanning and permanent jewelry. One thing that sets me apart from others is my attention for detail and care for my clients. I make sure to listen exactly to their beauty goals and desired look while using my knowledge and expertise, which is what I want potential clients to know: that they’ll always be heard.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
One way that has helped immensely with growing my clientele has been having my work be posted through The Jade Collective instagram page. While I do have my own business page, being posted through there has helped me because of the following they already have since I am a newer esthetician. I also have had luck gaining clientele by posting services I offer throughout my personal social media as well as within local Facebook groups.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
As of right now, I still consider esthetics as my side hustle. Since I am newer, my clientele is smaller. While I will be going to graduate school for my MSW, I do hope that my business will grow significantly enough to become my full time job. Some may wonder why I plan to still go to graduate school when I chose esthetics as a career. I have a passion for helping people whether that be within themselves or their confidence in their outer appearance.
