Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kai Watson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kai, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Risk #1
I’ve worked in corporate america as an Executive Assistant for Fortune 500 companies for 20+ years, while fighting my passion for the beauty industry to do what was deemed “safe” amongst my family. At the age of 42, I took a leap and decided to go to cosmetology school. I did this part time in the evenings after my shift was over at my full time job in corporate. Scared and feeling alone, because out of the entire school there were two other women in my age bracket and one of them did not continue. Most of the people there were fresh out of high school and most in their 20’s. But I stayed the course with the fear and self doubt (because I allowed my age to get in the way of my desires) and graduated Valedictorian of my class at the age of 44!
Risk #2
I was still employed in corporate america although I had become a fully licensed cosmetologist. When covid hit in 2020, I was laid off. Although, I practiced my license part time and after hours, I was not prepared for the lay-off. BUT at the same time, I was relieved. I was burned out with corporate politics and craving to do what I loved. So much, that I decided not to return and do what I loved full time.
Risk #3
After 3 years of working in my new field, I decided to switch gears a little and become a Cranial Prosthesis Practitioner. Which is a medical term for Medical Wigs. These wigs are specialty to persons dealing with hair loss in any form deemed by a licensed physician. I decided to dive into this side of hair because many of my patients were dealing with different types of alopecia and they loved the option of wearing wigs that were not only realistic, but classy as well. Rx Cranial Solutions was formed June 5, 2023. We are learning as we grow and enjoying the process along the way.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We also cater to the natural hair as well. We are currently in network with Superior Healthplan as well as Veteran Affairs. We can also work with insurance companies we are not in network with. Payment plans are offered for those who are not covered by insurance or who are not fully covered and have a percentage to pay.
One of the main things that I am proud of at my salon, is that work toward feel that every woman that walks through our door will leave feeling beautiful, inpired and needed. Discretion is one of our main focuses.
As fate would have it, the same level of people in corporate that I supported, I’m still supporting in the beauty industry! I have doctors, lawyers, executive level management, etc that faithly come to see me! How ironic is that?!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Wow! I’d have to say being a 42 year old mom and wife going to school in the evenings after working a full 9-5 for 18 mos while having self doubt is my true testiment of resilience. Although its not unheard of, its def not typical.
I knew this is what I wanted. But as an expert over thinker, I was too much in my own head. Imposter syndrome hit me real bad. I had the true case of “who do you think you are? You don’t belong here.” Being around all of these straight out of high school kids, I felt old! I thought, maybe i’m going through a mid-life crisis. But with my supporting husband and friends (even in school), I was able to move forward. No one at the school made me feel uncomfortable. It was all in my head.
Upon completing school, I was informed that I was selected as Valedictorian of my class! What a proud moment. It was at that moment I realized, Kai is a resillient woman! I pushed through NO MATTER WHAT! And this continues to play on post corporate. My mom raised a winner. Failure will NEVER be an option.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I create wigs on a sewing machine. I learned watching YouTube videos believe it or not. I would often get frustrated because my machine would constantly jam and my needles would break. It was an awful experience. I bit the bullet and decided to take a professional class, because clearly YouTube University was not giving all the tea! Sure enough, everything I thought I knew was a lie! LOL….The Brother sewing machine I bought on FB Marketplace was not heavy duty enough to do what I needed it to do. That’s why my thread and hair would tangle in the machine making it jam and my needles would break. I needed a Heavy Duty machine and heavy duty needles. My technique was correct, but not my tools. Once I learned what was needed, it was on from then. My next goal is an industrial sewing machine, to be able to manufacture more wigs in less time.
I also have vendors who can create specific types of machines that my machine isn’t able to do. My vendors came from the trials and errors of testing. I have one main one that is my “go to” and I have a back up vendor. Looking to add more quality vendors to my arsenal.
