We were lucky to catch up with Kai Sutton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kai, thanks for joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
In 2018, I was pregnant and running for public office. I also was apart of an organization that stood on the front lines for the community to fight racism. It was one of the most challenging times of my life.
At about 6 months pregnant, I was admitted to the hospital for the rest of my pregnancy due to severe illness and health complications. I was unable to work, feed my already 4 children and take care of my home. The way that the community stepped up and in for me was something like I never witnessed. I had support from friends campaigning for me while I was in the hospital, I had meal trains provided for my children so they can eat while I was unable to feed them while away, it was an outpour of support of essential items for me and the new baby which I had to deliver at 32 weeks, she was 2 pounds at birth.
It was the true definition of community. I never felt so loved and appreciated. It really shaped my love and passion and keeps me grounded and fuels my ambition to serve the community I live in.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Domestic Violence abuse is something that has been at my doorstep since I was a young girl. I experienced it first hand as a young girl watching my mother and other women in my family. As I grew up, I began to experience abuse within my own relationships. And with leaving out on my own to find peace and independence, I began my work in activism and raising awareness on issues such as domestic violence.
I encourage to find peace and self love to increase confidence and to beware of red flags and address things that make them uncomfortable. I want people to know that I am committed to my work, my word and the ability to leave an impact with others. I enjoy being an influence to young women and girls.
Each year I hold my annual self esteem conference for girls. We have girl speakers, entertainers, vendors and so much more. Its a lovely event to bring together parents and their girls together and to speak to their self esteem and confidence. The name of the conference is Amazingly ME. I have done the conference for 8 years in a row and each year it increases in size of attendees which really makes my heart smile.
I enjoy being an Empowerment Coach, Activist and soon to be published Author. I am doing the work that I love.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
I never had the desired capitol to start/fund my business. I operated on faith and action. Now, I would not recommend that to everyone but it worked. I took what I had to create my LLC, I learned to do that on my own for free. I charged vendors to table at my event, which funded decor and venue and had caterers donate to the cause. With persistence, I soon gained recognition of sponsors, donors and supporters.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I love quotes. I am a quote finder and creator.
One quote that I love and use often: Feel the fear and do it anyway.
