We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kai Livermore. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kai below.
Alright, Kai thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I began my career as a jazz guitarist, mostly performing with my own band, KENS. My days back then were structured—9 to 5 dedicated to practice, followed by evening performances. We created some amazing music together, music that was truly unique to us and something I had never heard before. During this time, my focus was clear: “Play guitar better and play more shows.” That was my driving force.
However, my perspective shifted when I enrolled in Berklee’s Film Scoring program on a full-tuition scholarship. It was there that I realized just how vast the music industry is and how many different opportunities exist—jobs that I had never even imagined. For instance, if you write beautiful orchestral music for a film, it’s not just about the composition. You’ll need the help of professionals like an orchestrator, who refines and enhances the orchestration, or a copier who makes the scores readable and prepares them for musicians. You’ll also rely heavily on a team of recording engineers who capture your music. These roles, and many others, are all essential in bringing a musical project to life.
As I developed my skills, I also began to realize that working in these fields could offer a more stable future. Let’s say KENS was thriving, with ten shows a month, and I was living the dream—everything seems perfect, right? But the truth is, if something unexpected were to happen, like an injury, and I could no longer play guitar, my income could instantly drop to zero. That’s when I started to see the value in composing music as a way to build passive income. Writing music for film or licensing it to libraries allows you to earn royalties over time without being directly tied to physical performances. It’s a way to generate a steady income stream, even when you’re not actively performing. This realization changed my approach to my career, making me appreciate the broader possibilities within the music industry.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Kai Livermore, a composer and guitarist. I was born in Japan in small village with Israeli parents. I started to play guitar only at age of 16 which is pretty late. My main project is my band, KENS, where we create unique and innovative music by collaborating with a wide range of talented artists, including Daniel Zamir, Sefi Zisling, and even string players from the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.
I’m currently graduating from Berklee College of Music, which has fully equipped me for a career in media composition. My work now spans a variety of projects, and I’m writing music for Japanese anime, indie films, and commercials, constantly exploring new ways to express myself through sound and collaborating with diverse creatives across different industries.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My personal goal is to become a reliable and trusted musician, someone that creators—whether in the music industry or beyond—can rely on to bring their visions to life. I want to be known as a person who can make their dreams a reality through music. On a personal level, I’m committed to continuing my own musical journey while also contributing my skills to help others realize their creative projects.
My biggest goal right now is releasing our next album, Atarayo. After the success of our debut album, Contact 123, we’re beyond excited about this follow-up. Atarayo is a huge step forward, both sonically and creatively. We’ve expanded our sound with the addition of a full string section, a horn section, and pushed our musical boundaries to the next level. Over 100 people have contributed to this album, and it truly feels like a monumental collaboration. We’re incredibly proud of the product, and I believe in it 100%. This is something special, and we can’t wait for you to hear it.”
In addition, I’m in the process of establishing a composer agency, which will bring together over 40 talented composers and orchestrators, along with 20 engineers, including mix engineers and sound designers. The concept behind this agency is to create a collaborative environment where my partner and I can secure projects and assemble the ideal teams of composers and engineers. This structure will allow us to produce a large volume of high-quality music in a short amount of time, meeting the demands of the ever-evolving music and media landscape.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What I love most about being an artist is the excitement of working on a different project every day. It’s a career where I rarely have to repeat myself, and I’m constantly learning new things. The variety keeps me on my toes and fuels my creativity.
I’ve also had my time working in a corporate environment, and while it was stable, it was a world where every day felt pretty much the same—same faces, same tasks. It lacked the dynamic energy that makes being an artist so fulfilling.
That said, the ever-changing nature of my work can be a double-edged sword. When I’m feeling drained, the constant shift can be overwhelming. But even when things get tough, I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
I was born in a small village in Japan, and whenever I go back for a visit, I’m always amazed at how envious my friends are of the lifestyle I’ve carved out for myself. It’s a reminder of how lucky I am to be living a life filled with creativity and endless possibilities
