We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kai FaKtor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kai , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
When I was 16, I joined a nonprofit organization that allowed me to share my music with the community. I performed at different events without expecting to get paid. But at the last show, someone surprised me with an envelope that had $200 and a letter that said, “Keep Going.”
That unexpected gift meant so much to me. It showed that someone believed in my music and wanted to support me. It gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams.
From that moment on, I dedicated myself to improving my skills and taking every opportunity that came my way. I faced many challenges along the way, but that act of kindness always reminded me to keep pushing forward.
Now, as a successful musician/artist, I will never forget the impact that small gesture had on my journey. It taught me the power of following my passion and the importance of believing in myself.
So, if you have a dream, remember that sometimes even a small act of kindness can change everything. Embrace your passion, face the challenges head-on, and always keep going. You never know what amazing things await you on your journey.

Kai , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Yes, Kai FaKtor is a singer/songwriter from the US Virgin Islands. In 2019, Kai moved to San Antonio, Texas and released a mixtape called, “Planet Happiness”. The release of Planet Happiness propelled his music career, giving him opportunities to perform at Niosa, SXSW and also the chances to share the stage with other great acts. Kai later then released two E.Ps titled, “the nothing I’ve been doing” and “the nothing I’ve been up to”. Most notable songs from those releases are Taco also known as the official Taco Anthem of San Antonio and Shining.
In 2023, Kai opened up for Rancho181’s Tacofest with his song Taco. Definitely a highlight in his career. Kai FaKtor is currently working on his studio album, CottonCandy Skies and an upcoming mixtape projected to be released this summer called Certified SummerBoy.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being a passionate musician/artist, we all face challenges on our journey to success. On my journey, I struggled to find my unique sound and experienced a sense of discomfort trying to fit into my environment. I was trying to accommodate my current audience without compromising my style of music. Me being a pop genre artist performing at rap/hiphop shows definitely didn’t help, though I stayed determined and resilient.
Getting gigs and building an audience was a challenge. I used those experiences as motivation and performed at small venues as if it was performing at Madison Square Garden. Regardless of the venue and crowd, I will always give my all. Furthermore, I used social media to share my music independently, eventually growing my online presence and following. This led to opportunities at local festivals and collaborations. Each success fueled my resilience and self-belief.
Throughout my journey, I stayed grateful and embraced obstacles as chances to grow. My story inspires aspiring musicians, showing that resilience, perseverance, and self-belief can make dreams come true.
My unwavering commitment to my craft exemplifies resilience in the music industry. I turned setbacks into stepping stones; leaving a lasting impact with my authentic storytelling and indomitable spirit.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
When cultivating a thriving artist ecosystem, society can show appreciation to the artist and their contributions through awards, public recognition, and platforms that celebrate their work. Also by encouraging public engagement and support. Actively participating in the arts by attending performances, exhibitions, and cultural events. Support local artists by purchasing their work, attending their shows, and sharing their content, creating a sustainable ecosystem that promotes artistic growth.
