We were lucky to catch up with Kahmaré recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kahmaré , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned in school and why that lesson is important to you?
The most important lesson I learned was back in my sophomore year of college but I truly didn’t learn until my junior year! In school I learned the basics of framing, camera operation, script writing and production 101, for some reason Kahmaré thought because she knew the basics that she knew everything. I was on top of the world, u couldn’t tell me nothing, if I already knew something I would let it be known that I know that and didn’t have my mind open to learn. I had an internship over the summer where my ego was crushed and I was humbled because there was so much more for me to learn, such as lighting, color grading, pre production and more. I shortly came to realize that I didn’t really know anything and even the basic stuff I knew I still didn’t really master it! That summer I learned that I didn’t really know anything and I need to be willing to learn instead of thinking I know it all! So fast forward to fall semester I am back on campus and I am willing to learn and I am more open. If someone said something I already knew I would still listen because even if it’s something I know I can always learn something new. I also learned that there are basics but art is subjective and you can bend the rules to make things work for you a bit. I also saw this scenario in full circle because my junior year I became Vice President of my schools content creation org on campus and one of the members acted just like me he knew the basics and thought because he knows basics he knew everything! We had evaluations for each member and I told him you remind me of myself and to chill and be willing to learn you are getting a big head right now! He really appreciated it because he didn’t see it then but he said he understood what I said and can see how he is being like that so that was beautiful as well going through something in life and being a belt to also help someone else as well!

Kahmaré , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Wassup everyone!
My name is Kahmaré and I am a Creative Director. I have always had a love for creating and directing since I was a kid. If anyone asked me what I wanted to be I would tell them a movie and TV director but as I got older and learned what I liked and don’t like I was able to figure out what areas I want to truly be in! I would say college is where I got my start to truly branch out, network, work with equipment and most importantly find myself. On my campus we have an org called DESU TV where I learned a lot about production, camera operation, social media and more and that’s where I truly fell in love with directing! Since graduating I use my time now to network and work on different projects! Right now I creatively direct photoshoots, and I help people with the creative process whether you have an idea and don’t know how to display that or I can start from scratch and come up with a cool concept! I help with the pre production where we will have a few sessions to go over what you are looking for, then I will create a mood board and shot list of the concept! I also help with location scouting as well and any part of the creative process that a person may be stuck on! I am most proud of the ability to make people happy and feel a sense of relief to help them get their creative ideas out visually! I want people to know that I really care about my craft and the people I work with, I will always make sure that I have great communication and organization with my clients. I want this to be a smooth process and I will work to make it as smooth and possible!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is two things. First is the trust that I am able to build with myself, to know that I can start something and finish it. It helped with confidence and being excited about starting a project. Second, the way that I am able to inspire other creatives and give them advice. The other day I ran into a creative and we had a great talk about putting yourself out there and don’t be anxious because you are good enough it was great to drop a gem on someone!

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think that non creatives won’t understand how everything that I see is creative or can be captured! On a day to day I see the world in such a creative and cinematic way some people get it and some people don’t! I know that everyone won’t understand the concepts I come up with all the time!
