We were lucky to catch up with Kaegan Alazander Blaq recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaegan , thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned how to direct films by doing it, if that’s makes sense. Sometimes you have to try something and then learn about it as you go. Sometimes we will think ourselves right out of something we want to do because we are scared to fail at it. So I failed and got better learned from my mistakes. Read books and watched YouTube videos all these things helped me. I’m still learning but I’m far better than where I begin my career. I’m not sure if there is anything I could have done to speed things up it takes time to learn a craft. The most important skills I think are determination, leadership and patience. I would say that the obstacles at first was not having the resources to completely dive into the craft. Not knowing who to ask about making films.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kaegan Alazander Blaq and I’m a Filmmaker/Creator in Dallas Texas. I started making films in 2018. I was a music artist before then and one day I was introduced to someone who was in the process of making a short film. I worked with him on the project and after that I was hooked. Shortly after I started writing my own stories and eventually I produced my first short film in 2018 called Meet Da Fam. What sets me apart from other film directors is my unique view on stories and my attention to detail. I love taking time to complete to carefully perfect my visions from pre production to post production. What I am proud of most is where I started to where I am now, I literally just tried something and it changed my life nothing has ever felt better than making a film to me it’s the ultimate experience. I’m also proud of my film production company Al Blaq Filmz which I started back in 2018. I’ve produced 4 short films a comedy special and one feature length film to date. I’m also working on my second feature film at the time of this interview titled Mojo Savage.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes my goal is to give back to the art of film as much as I can. Film was very instrumental in my childhood and because it brought me so much joy I feel it is my responsibility to add on to this phenomenal art form.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
From my first short film I think that standard was set. I wanted to make sure that people felt the authenticity in my work. I wanted to tell stories that my people could relate to and above all make them feel something emotionally.
