Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ka’Deshia Monaé. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ka’Deshia, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Yes, I am ver y happy I chose the more artistic creative route. It’s not for the fait of heart because as a makeup artist we do run into “slow” seasons, but I take that opportunity to regroup and adjust. In those times i discover a new way to stay inspired and create. Sometimes I do contemplate going back to corporate America because of the stability, but every time I do try to back I loose my drive and my creativity seems to decrease.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a licensed esthetician and professional makeup artist. I got into the industry after a failed attempt to joining the U.S Air force due to my scoliosis at the time. I always loved skincare and makeup but never thought I could really make a profitable career out of it. I took a step out on faith an enrolled into esthetics school from there it took off for me. I went from doing fashions shows, getting published in magazines and having the opportunity to participate in NYFW 19′ and more and I am very proud of my accomplishments. However, I began to desire more from my gifts and from my own business.
Thats when I began working on ways to give back to my community and industry in anyway possible. I wanted to become more purpose driven in my beauty career, so I became an esthetics instructor. So now I teach and mentor other future beauty professionals. I want to be as helpful as I wish others would have been when I started because it is very tough in the beginning and you will need a lot of faith and patience. I began creating my own sops and skin care products and hopefully one day I can teach others how to make their own too!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my end-game goal is to have a school of my own. Not just for makeup but also to help establish small business owners in the industry starting out. Hopefully, be in a position to provide certain tools they will need to get started.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the pandemic, I realizes just providing a service wasn’t enough and also it was very draining. Being booked up is a great feeling but, it definitely has an effect on your body. Thats when I decided to dig a little bit deeper of what I want to leave behind.
I took a backset of always being booked, to creating skincare. one reason was to tap into another passion of mine that I would always put off, Another was for creating another source of income for myself and it was great opportunity for them to both market each other simultaneously.
