We recently connected with Kacee Anderson and have shared our conversation below.
Kacee , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve had many meaningful projects over the years. One of the best things about being a photographer is that my work is cherished by people for years to come. It reminds them of special moments in their lives. Some of my most meaningful projects relate to those who are no longer with us. I gifted a session to a dear family whose father was losing a battle with cancer. I’ve taken photos of another family before the mom started her chemotherapy. Every single wedding marks a huge day in the lives of my clients. It is always an honor to photograph those moments.
But one of my very first sessions still means the most to me. My brother and his girlfriend (but future wife) were going to be in town. They were willing and excited to let me take their photos. He normally hates photos. I knew this was special in the way my brother laughed and smiled for the camera with her. Despite my inexperience at the time, I really love how those photos turned out and cherish them to this day. And a couple years later I was able to capture their engagement session back home in a location that was also meaningful to them. I look back on those photos and am so grateful that I was able to document their love.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been an avid picture taker my entire life, but my photography journey really started almost 10 years ago. When I was pregnant with my first child I decided to start taking photos because I wanted to be the one to document the special moments in her life. I soon had family and friends who were willing participants in my new hobby. I took online courses and practiced with lots and lots of hands on experience. Eventually as I learned my craft I was able to take on paying clients. And it has grown year after year. I am always looking for ways to take my skills to the next level. I want that next session to be the best one yet.
Smiling faces looking at the camera are great, but I also adore those special moments in-between. The expressions that show off a little one’s personality, the small glances between couples, and the genuine smiles from teens are the moments I live for. Not everyone loves taking photos, but I try to make it a fun experience for every single client.
I am so proud of where I am today and thankful to continue shooting a variety of sessions. I love the families and milestones that come back to me year after year. I especially adore my seniors and couples who trust me with those once-in-a-lifetime moments.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I do plenty of marketing, but the best source of clientele is hands down the referral. When someone I know or have worked with previously recommends me it means the world to me. To know that clients have had a wonderful experience and want others to have the same lets me know I’m doing something right.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are so many aspects of photography that I love. Getting out and exploring the beauty all around the city is one of the best parts. I love looking at things differently. A lot of my favorite locations are not your typical field or park. When clients trust me and help make a vision comes to life, I can help them to see just how truly incredible they are. And when I can help a shy teen open up and feel confident during their session, that confidence will shine through in their photos.
