We recently connected with Kabrena Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Kabrena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Pursuing blogging was something even I wasn’t expecting to love so much. So, taking a risk at blogging while juggling a demanding career in the healthcare field left me questioning my capabilities and goals on many occasions. Ultimately, I knew I couldn’t give up after investing in courses, coaching, and digging in on what it takes to be a successful blogger online. Honestly? I’m still in the thick of it, and building a bootstrap business is hard, but when I think about my brand’s mission and values, I know that I’ll be so proud of 2-5 years from now myself for not giving up.
Kabrena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my business at the peak of Covid when I received a phone call from my former employer that I was “let go” from the company. I was a burnt-out clinician that chopped up my burnout as something normal because everyone around me was burnt out too. Fast forward to a month later, I founded Kb in Bloom, a lifestyle website grounded in self-care for BIPOC women who want to re-ignite or initiate their wellness practices. I realized with just one Google search that there are literally no currently operating wellness and lifestyle websites for black and brown women. Kb in Bloom is for women who look like me that crave a site that speaks to them on every level.
Once it became clear that Kb in Bloom was not just a phase but a movement dispelling the myth that BIPOC women can’t handle their business and take of themselves, our views and subscribers began increasing each month. Opportunities like these are fantastic things that have happened in terms of the growth of the site. I am so proud of where we are; we are just getting started. I can’t wait to witness our growth in one year. The motto “you need you” is for those who need a gentle nudge to remind them that taking care of themselves is not a crime. It’s non-negotiable.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I go back and forth with this one. I mean, the signs were always there that I would eventually go on to start my own business. I hate people telling me what to do, and I love the freedom of doing things my way while supporting myself and my family. I would have probably gone with my gut and majored in something like entrepreneurship and creative writing in undergraduate school.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I remember when I filed for my first business, LLC. I loved everything about that business, and it was in consulting. I realized nine months into it that I no longer felt joy waking up to work on the company and needed to pivot quickly. I started shifting my focus on Kb in Bloom and posting consistently on Instagram. Once I realized that I had the “sauce” and could create a community online, I started shifting my focus on where my energy and efforts needed to be, doubling down on the one thing I owned: my website.
