We recently connected with Kaan Tulgar and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaan, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Every project is meaningful to me. Being selected to capture one’s most important day is as meaningful as it gets. To me, it is an exclusive and personal invitation. An honor of being chosen, of all the professionals, to document an event that will be cherished for years to come, perhaps long after I am gone. It was once said “today is tomorrow’s history”, so document it while you can. One of my favorite quotes of all time is by Jarod Kintz “Let me just pause a minute and drink in this moment. And if you film it, we’ll get refills for life.”
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am no stranger to film and video production. Coming from a family with an extensive film background, I have been editing since I was 13 years old. After receiving my degree from Ramapo College of New Jersey with honors in Fine Arts/Visual Arts, I spent over a decade perfecting my skills in the art of wedding cinematography and special event videography.
Since 2000, I have been capturing weddings in New Jersey and New York. In addition to documenting over 1,500 weddings, my resume also includes numerous bar/bat mitzvahs, sweet 16s, graduations, dance recitals, sporting events, commercials and corporate videos. Through the years, I have documented many events domestically and internationally.
Awards for my work include: 2005 New York International Independent Film and Video Festival Winner (Best Comedy), Telly Awards Finalist (Video Biography), The Videographers Award (NJ Best Wedding Videographer) and DV Awards (NJ Wedding Videographer) just to name a few.
My true desire lies in the privilege of capturing people’s most remarkable days. My work is much more than business – it’s personal. I continue to provide my clients with exceptional customer service and outstanding products, illustrated with passion.
“I enjoy my work, because on many occasions my clients become my friends.”
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Simply put… Always deliver what you say you will deliver, treat your clients with utmost respect and try your best to do better every day. Stay open-minded, continue to learn, adjust and adopt to the new technology.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
I think one of the most aggressive marketing strategies I had was at the beginning of my career when I launched my business. Internet was around, but nothing like today; and, the phones were still phones. Because I didn’t have enough budget to spend on print advertising which was very costly at the time, I used to go to bookstores and place my business cards inside all the wedding magazines. That’s a lot of bookstores, a lot of magazines and a lot of business cards. Many hours of work, patience and some business cards that cost much less than placing an ad in a magazine, delivered the kind of result that I was hoping for at the time. Desperate times call desperate measures ;)
