We were lucky to catch up with K.T. Truong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi K.T., thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I started out in a basic non standard salon not realizing that there was more to nails and toes. It wasn’t until I attended my first nail show that I realized there was soo much more to the industry aside from making them pretty. There was a whole nother side to the nail world and it was health and wellness. The possibilities of correcting an invuluted toe nail, being able to relieve pain or creating a toenail for a none existent toenail was all a possibility as long as I furthered my career through education. After taking alot of different types of classes, I am now even certified to teach a variety of different topics, from nail art to nail care.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi all! My name is K.T. I got into the nail industry at a very young age thanks to my parents. I have been doing nails since 1988 and recently started educating since 2017 for various companies. I would say my specialty and favorite things to do is toes. I love helping people with pain or being able to create a beautiful toenail for them. I also brace and perform toenail corrections for invuluted nails. What sets me apart from other nail technician is being able to give each and every one of my client a personalized service depending on their needs. I am most proud of all the classes I have taken in order to stay up to date on trending health topics. Although I enjoy making beautiful toenails and fingernails, keeping them healthy is my first priority. I only use top of the line quality products.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Being a one on one salon, the most effective way to grow clientele is either through word of mouth or social media. Always post your work. There are many social platforms that you can advertise on. For example, the neighborhood page in your business area. Or even collaborating with other businesses in your area is also very helpful.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Having an open mind. Even if sometimes the idea of something may sound off, hear the person out. Every person has their own experiences. I tend to take it as free advice. I sometimes will take the same class but from different instructors just to see if they can offer something more. Things changes with time, so it’s not a one and done thing. You have to stay updated on your education and training.
