We were lucky to catch up with K. Renée recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi K. Renée , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
As a cosmetologist and permanent makeup artist I aim to enhance the appearance of my clients without the use of harsh chemicals in cosmetics & toxic products while maintaining a natural look.
As a special effects make up artist, bodypainter & creative director I aim to use my creativity to bring my clients vision into life!
My overall mission is to make the world look and feel beautiful from the inside out.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I specialize in brows, lashes & natural hair care. My approach to beauty is always holistic. I believe that our body, mind, spirit, and the environment are all interconnected and affects our health. Growing up in the suburbs of Maryland I was raised around nature and my parents were always pretty health conscious. Hair braiding was a family hobby. I began doing hair in middle school and I became a cosmetologist after I graduated high school. At 21 after witnessing loved ones suffering from poor health I got into nursing, went natural and begin making my own beauty products. I’m currently working on launching my own organic beauty products.
My passion for special effects makeup artistry & painting comes from an extremely young age. My earliest memories includes sitting in the bathroom watching my mom do her makeup and playing fairytale dress up. Being able to combine the two, having a career in creation and making the world look and feel beautiful, is truly a dream come true.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons that I’ve unlearned is applying excessive makeup or hair products without maintaining the health of your skin or hair beneath it all as well as depending on cosmetics to feel beautiful.
In cosmetology school we studied skin & scalp diseases and conditions and chemical science. I quickly learned how what and what not to use.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had a pivot in my cosmetology career and life when I witnessed loved ones suffering from poor health and realized the causes.
Around that time I had decided I wanted to be the change for myself and my family by avoiding toxic foods & products. I began studying holistic nursing, cooking plant based and avoiding products with toxic ingredients.
