We caught up with the brilliant and insightful K J a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi K, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I started Beautee Within You to remind people that beauty doesn’t start on the outside, it starts on the inside. I have a mission of making people feel beautiful inside and out. I love to talk about self care and taking care of your skin. So many people don’t understand why it’s important to take care of your skin or what products to use so I take time to explain that when I do markets. I let people sample a popular product I sell so they can get a feel for it. If they love it, they will come back for more. I am currently gaining more knowledge about skin care to take my business and skills to the next level.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m KJ, the owner and creator of Beautee Within You. BWY was created in 2019 just by me making handmade lip gloss and trying to sell eyelashes. The eyelashes failed unfortunately. But lip gloss was my thing. Making beauty products that people enjoyed and came back for, made me feel good so I knew I had to keep going. Over the years, I have added skincare and bodycare products to my business in hopes of helping people take care of their skin. I’m not perfect so it took me some trial and error periods before I got it right. My motto now is “promoting skincare and self care”. Although they are two different meanings, they tie into the same, taking care of self. What sets me apart from others is that I’m very passionate about what I do and helping others. I’m currently in school to become a licensed esthetician. When I finish the program and take my state boards, the sky will be the limit!

We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I sell on my own website through Shopify. I have been with them since I started my business and used the free trial that they offer to get it off the ground. I chose that route because I could make it my own. I have the freedom to add what I want and price my products how I feel. I also think it’s a pretty easy platform to navigate. I have utilized Etsy before but I could never keep up with it. And by that, I just mean it was hard for me to keep track of my website and Etsy. I make all my products by hand, on top of working a full time W2 job, being a mom, a wife, and over the years a student. So I had to learn how to use my time wisely and not burn myself out. That lead me to only use my website for online orders. Just make sure you keep your inventory up to date.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I don’t know if it would be considered a lesson, but I had to unlearn not caring if someone buys or not. Throughout my working adult life, I had the mentality of if someone buys they buy, if they don’t, they don’t. When you have a business, you can’t think like that. True that everyone is not your audience or will not buy, that’s fine. What I mean is, every purchase matters. You want people to buy from you, to support you, to come back to you and recommend others to you. You don’t ever want to come off as desperate but people know when you are being genuine or just trying to take their money. That’s what will help with sales and building a loyal clientele.
