We recently connected with K.H. Koehler and have shared our conversation below.
K.H., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
One of the biggest differences between my company, KH Koehler Design, and other, similar companies is our wide range of supportive services. We will literally take a rough manuscript and turn it into a fully realized product that can be sold on any platform. We offer edits, covers, finishing touches, and even marketing material. We do it all, which greatly helps our clients. They don’t need to rotate through a roster of different creatives.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was one of the founders of KHP Publishers back in the early 2000s, and we published a myriad of different titles in various genres, which gave me a strong foundation for what the industry looks for and what readers enjoy. After I departed that enterprise, I used my almost two decades of “living” in the publishing industry and the enormous range of experience from it to help writers achieve their goals by tackling all parts of the publishing process, which makes my work unique. My clients love the fact that I can help them edit their manuscripts, create a marketable package, and guide them painlessly through the process from beginning to end. I even try to make the experience fun instead of alien and stressful!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Absolutely word of mouth. Ninety-nine percent of my clients come to me because their friend worked with me and we were so successful together and they enjoyed the experience. My philosophy is to be the hand-holder in the relationship. Writers can be sensitive to things like criticism, so it’s imperative they have the proper armor before they hit the venues. That includes a perfect edit, a beautiful, marketable cover, and complete confidence and pride in what they have accomplished. I choose to be instrumental in that journey.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to see writers succeed. It’s all too easy to just “do the work” and leave the author to figure things out. That’s essentially how much of self-publishing works. Everyone has a separate journey. But there are things you can do to help land sales and be long-term successful, and most of my clients have struggled with aspects of that in the past. Many are burned on traditional publishing and have decided to go their own way. I respect that because I’ve been on that journey. And I want to support them. I want to give them the best opportunity to storm the market. I want to support their unique voice but also fine-tune it. You can’t do that without proper tools, so I consider myself their mechanic, getting their work to a level of professionalism that can compete with, or even exceed, mainstream publishing.
