We caught up with the brilliant and insightful K.C. Lindsay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, K.C. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Explaining what it’s like to be a business owner to a person who never has been a business owner before is extremely tough because the entire experience, in many different aspects is not relatable to those who have only held a standard or corporate 9-5 job. When I first started my own business, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would build the business to what it currently is, so there are many days where it’s hard to steady my feet and it can be quite overwhelming.
While there are many pros and cons to being a business owner, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. A few of the pros that help me through the tough days include the fact that I get to make a difference in my community when it comes to pet care. So many people and their pets depend on me and the business I run. I often think to myself, “What would this family do without us?” Knowing that we are an extension of so many fur baby families in our communities, is what drives me on both a business and personal level. I love being able to provide support for so many fur baby families.
In addition, I love building my team. Supporting my team and encouraging every team member to be not only the best Pet Care Specialist they can be, but also strive to reach their full potential on a personal level has been extremely gratifying to help others along their life journey to find out who they are and what they want to do to make a positive impact on others.
There are moments where I think to myself that it would be MUCH easier to have a 9-5 job. The idea of clocking out at 5:00, not having to think about work after hours or on the weekends, and holidays, any mistakes being handled by someone else other than myself and simply being able to have a healthy work/life balance, can sound super appealing especially on high stress days. What always grounds me is the fact that I love what I do, I love helping out others, I love my team, and I always reflect on the fur babies that provide unconditional love day in and day out to be my driving force and encouragement along the way.
K.C., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is K.C. and I am the owner of Fur Baby Comfort & Care, a professional pet sitting business that prides itself on providing peace of mind to Fur Baby owners. Our team of Pet Care Specialists are dedicated to servicing all types of animals from dogs who have issues with socialization, temperament, or medical problems to families who have a full farm of animals to tend to, reptiles, and more!
As pet lovers ourselves, we seek to provide connection to the animals in our care to ensure they feel safe even when the owner is not present and establish an understanding of the inner workings and family dynamics that owners have with their pets in order to remain in lockstep with communication and training techniques.
At Fur Baby Comfort & Care, going the extra mile to provide exceptional care is our forte. It truly is a blessing to become a member of our clients fur baby families!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In all transparency, being the face and owner of a small business is extremely hard.
At Fur Baby Comfort & Care, we’re in the business of quality service. That means going above and beyond, managing people and animals, and, of course, servicing people’s pride and joy – their pets.
That’s why it’s no surprise that emotions can run high in a variety of situations, and, why as an owner, I can become both physically and mentally exhausted quite often. But despite feeling depleted at times, there’s something more powerful that pushes me through the day to day and drives me to continue pushing Fur Baby Comfort & Care forward: ensuring each animal and family receives the quality care they deserve.
My capabilities and personality are not defined by my business, nor does my business entity have emotion and empathy.
Simply put, we find ourselves in situations often where our policies are criticized, our operations ridiculed and even hurtful words shared. As a small business owner, it’s up to me to compartmentalize the lack of understanding that goes into the backend costs of our business and the policies that support them, but as a human, I also have to take into account the livelihoods of the workers that support our business and clientele every day. Without me standing up for our operations, this small business wouldn’t be able to run efficiently and probably wouldn’t be able to keep the doors open.
So, I understand why emotions run high and I understand that managing this business comes with highs and lows, but please remember behind every small business, there is an owner with real feelings and emotions, who works around the clock to keep their business afloat.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Our business grows daily based on referrals alone. By establishing close connections with our clients, we are currently in a position where we don’t need to market or brand ourselves heavily because of our referral base alone. We think of our clients as a part of our family and I believe that helps set the tone of the working relationships we have with one another.
It takes A LOT of trust to trust another person with your beloved family members and home. By allowing clients to build that trust with us through the experience we provide for them, word of mouth from current clients is how we gain new clients.
