We recently connected with Jyssica White and have shared our conversation below.
Jyssica , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope that my legacy would be that more people will have an understanding of their hair and embrace their hair for what it does . I want people to have fun with their hair instead of it being a “thing “ . I’d like pass the torch to my daughter one day , so she can continue educating , which will help the generations to come .
Myself and many others that share a similar passion have been working very hard in healing the trauma that one’s before us have gone through with their hair . Curly hair is not the enemy and in the future I want to see more people embrace it .
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I fell in love with natural hair care while trying to find out what was going on with mine , in middle school I began to lose my hair .My mother and I saw a couple doctors , but we were treating my hair on our own while also educating ourselves on hair care to our best abilities . Struggling with my hair motivated me to enroll in cosmetology school . I attended the Aveda Institute of Tallahassee where I learned more about hair , I found my purpose! literally a week or two away from graduating I found out I had PCOS which is polycyclic ovarian syndrome and it was the cause of my alopecia . I want to share my knowledge and love for caring for Hair with the world especially women with kinky , curly , coarse hair . I want to show women that they CAN love their hair and it can get healthy and STAY healthy with a little help ! There’s tons of misinformation online about hair care so I made it my mission to re-educate my clients , introduce them to the science of hair , and just overall help them gain an understanding so hair care becomes simple . I teach my clients how to maintain their hair in between appointments and they just see me for cuts and color . I love that they learn so much and apply what they’ve learned after our initial meeting .
I primarily cut my clients hair in it’s natural state . Most curly clients straighten their hair on occasion if at all , so I cut to how they’ll be wearing their hair most of the time . At our first appointment which is called Curl CPR, I re-educate and reintroduce as well as blow their mind ! We also develop a plan together based on their needs , the curl cut is also established at this time as well , the cut is very important and that is the main thing my clients see me for after a few weeks of home care .
I’m proud that I’ve been able so assist hundreds of people! I’ve been in the beauty industry 8 years , I’ve dedicated my career to help others feel beautiful and confident . My passion is what sets me apart . I’ve strictly dealt with Natural Hair after cosmetology school . While attending, I had a plan and stuck with it .
I’m pleased to be a part of the Natural Hair evolution.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I’ve made my clients my walking business card and billboard. My clientele is able to style their hair as if they just left the salon ! They’re always telling me how they’re stopped everywhere with others inquiring about their hair . Word of mouth has built my business .
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I feel like I’ve been ordained to do what I do , nothing else feels right and believe me I’ve tried other things . I’ve gotten my feet wet with experimenting with things like extensions and makeup, but working with Natural Hair is for me …I fit right here .
Knowing that I’m needed is what fuels me as well as my love for my career .
