We were lucky to catch up with Jynafer Yanez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jynafer, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
One of the biggest ways we diverge from the publishing industry standard is in how personal and nimble we can be. Traditional publishing often needs massive teams—upward of 75 people—to take a book from idea to reader. But in our indie model, it’s just the two of us, supported by a small, mighty crew of contractors, getting it done with heart and hustle.
Because we’re independent, we can move fast, follow trends, and respond directly to our readers’ interests—sometimes within weeks instead of years. We don’t just release books; we build community, connect with our readers in real-time, and give them more of what they love. It’s a relationship, not just a transaction.
And from a business perspective, that independence means we keep more of the royalties—allowing us to generate meaningful income for our family and reinvest in the people who help us make it all happen. We don’t have to split the pie with a big corporate machine, which gives us both freedom and sustainability.
At the end of the day, we’re not chasing a publishing trend—we’re serving a loyal audience, doing work we love, and building something lasting. That’s what makes the difference.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m one half of a husband-and-wife team building stories, worlds, and a business from the ground up.
We both started in more traditional corporate or corporate-adjacent careers and found that the work we were doing didn’t light us up. Coming to the realization that life was too short to be doing anything except pursuing our purpose, we burned our boats and went all in on this dream.
Our journey into publishing wasn’t typical. Jonathan started as an indie author driven by a love for sci-fi and a deep desire to create stories full of heart, action, grit, and hope. Meanwhile, armed with her background in advertising, business strategy, and a deep love of books, I stepped in to grow the publishing platform and support the thriving community around it.
Together, we’ve built a boutique publishing house that does what most people think takes a whole corporate team. From writing and editing to marketing, ad strategy, audio, and even film development, we wear a lot of hats—but at the core, our work is about connecting readers with stories they love and characters they’ll root for.
We specialize in fast-paced, action-packed science fiction and supernatural thrillers that often feature unlikely heroes, loyal companions, high stakes, and a thread of humor or heart that leaves readers feeling fired up and full of hope. We’re especially proud of building not just a business but a sustainable creative life of freedom—one that lets us spend more time with our kids, collaborate with other creatives, and support budding artists with meaningful work.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Absolutely. A while back, we hit a stretch where sales were shifting—and not in a good way. Numbers were dipping below our minimums, and it was clear we needed to make a change, fast. It wasn’t just about keeping things afloat; it was about staying true to the vision and making sure we could continue doing what we love.
Instead of panicking, we got creative. Well, I panicked a little. Then, we took a hard look at everything—what was working, what wasn’t, and where we were investing time and energy. Together, we repackaged a few series to reach new audiences, doubled down on the products and strategies that had been winners in the past, and let go of the things that weren’t serving us anymore. Our mantra became: “Only do what makes the boat go faster.”
And it worked.
Not only did we recover, but that season of struggle ended up strengthening our belief in ourselves and our business. We came out of it with more clarity, confidence, and connection than ever before. The result? Some of our best sales years yet—and more importantly, a renewed sense of purpose. It showed me personally where I had a chance to grow, too. That resilience didn’t just impact our bottom line; it deepened our relationship with our readers and helped us forge new friendships and partnerships with fellow creatives and founders.
It reminded us that hard seasons are opportunities in disguise—and that when you stay grounded in your mission, you can weather just about anything.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
For years, our readers told us the same thing: “These books need to be movies.” We’d heard it over and over—at signings, in fan mail, online reviews. After having a few titles optioned and exploring the traditional film route, we finally decided to flip the script.
We went straight to our community(our Pack) and said, “If you fund it, we’ll make it happen.” That’s how our first Kickstarter campaign was born. We weren’t sure what to expect, but our readers showed up in a big way. With their help, we raised $60,000 to bring our first short film—more of a pilot episode—to life.
From what we’ve heard, we were one of the first in the indie author world to crowdfund a project of that size. And, ironically, it wasn’t even for a book. But we weren’t afraid to go first. We looked to what creatives in other industries were doing and leaned into the passion and momentum of our audience.
Jonathan brought his relentless “no-one-outworks-me” drive, I brought my background in production, and we teamed up with an incredibly talented crew. Together, we filmed and produced a 30-minute cinematic short in under 8 months.
That film has since gone on to be selected by several film festivals, win awards, and reach over 300,000 views on YouTube. But more than that, it’s proof of what can happen when you listen to your audience, bet on yourself, and build something together.
