Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jwalt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jwalt, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I started out as a poet. When I was in the second grade I performed at my elementary’s school Martin Luther Ling oratorical fest and that was my first introduction into the arts. from there I continued to do it every year for the rest of elementary school. middle school was when I saw the correlation between poetry and rap and is when In started getting into hip-hop. my homie who is also a artist Zo1 got me started into rap and introduced me to this youth organization in Oakland,CA called “Young Gifted and Black” and that is where I really fell in love with the art and when I realized I wanted to make music and be an artist for the rest of my life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Jwalt, and I am a hip-hop artist, poet, and songwriter from Oakland, CA. My music has gave me the opportunity to travel all over the world to perform and share my art. The main thing I want potential fans to know about me and my work is that it is true and authentic
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that I get to share my art with the world and make people feel. art is a universal language that everyone speaks and understands, so the fact that I get to do this on a high level and inspire people with my art is truly a blessing.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Putting art into the world is scary and takes courage! it’s not as easy as it looks or what people may think. I use this analogy a lot, but it is kind of like a parent sending off their kid to school for the first time. as a parent you want your kid to be loved, not judged, and treated respectfully, but sometimes not everyone may treat your kid the right way. it is the same with music. everything we create is like our babies and when we put out our want everyone to love it and treat our art with care, but not everyone may like our art and thats ok. just learning to accept that and make the art that you want to make is the best thing.
