We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justyna Wołodkiewicz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justyna below.
Hi Justyna, thanks for joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I’ve always been creative. The child that most of her time spends at the desk making weird things. Prior to my artistic discovery ( of combining clay and embroidery) I’ve been sculpting in polymer clay for several years. In the meantime I followed some textile artist on social media and really admired their work. The idea came to me instantenously, one day. It was so magical, like one of those eureca moments. I felt like a child who entered a fairy land. Clay and thread embroideries flooded my mind and they looked like a pieces of good fun. I was in the flow. Actually at that time I was pregnant and my daughter was due in 3 months. And I like to believe that she brought to me that idea with her amazing spirit.
Justyna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an independent artist. I focus my life around family and little farm that we live on. I do not make a living from my art. I make my stuff as a hobby. In this way I maintain high quality of my artworks. I have a time and space to prevent myself from burnout. I create only when I’m in the flow. I do not force myself creatively. I do not make commisions ( or very rarely). Every artwork I make brings me pure joy and feeds my soul. Suprisingly, I was not that much happy about the situation. I used to complain that I loose a chance for a great career. I was Paulo Coelho enthusiast who would rather makes her dream come true or die trying.
Then, in 2017 we moved from the city to the countryside. For me it was beginning of pivotal changes. I learned so much about life. My priorities shifted. I had a new perspective on life.
I realized that fast succesful art career is not for me. Slow life is for me. My family is for me. Peace and health is for me.
In the end what counts is not the amount of money or number of artworks I made.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My new goal is to develop myself artistically in harmony with life. I would love to learn stitching portraits. I already do sketches and self- studies on drawing humans. I aim to excercise my patience and endurance to make huge artworks.
I would love to create statement pieces that tells the life stories for people about people.
I would love to invite to my studio other artists who wants to share ideas and exchange experiences. People who are seeking to develop their art and learn new technique in textile art.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The journey of creating is revarding in itself. The most I can get is when I stitch and sculpt. I’m feeling like a child in the playground. I follow my instincts. I experiment. I leave when I’m bored. I meditate or swim in the stream of thoughts. I love how the artwork takes shape. And I still desn’t understand the magic that goes through my eyes and hands, takes shape on the hoop. Where does that beauty come from?
