We were lucky to catch up with Justyna Pagan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Justyna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I never thought I was good enough and had a lot to learn still (which is true, there is always something new to be learned) when it came to photography. I have always practiced on my kids and my friends and strived to be the best that I could be at that. And as I imporved I got more and more support from my friends and family. It was such a great feeling knowin I have that village behind me to cheer me on. As my confidence and portfolio grew it was their support grew. I feel like I am lucky to have my village, I went through a lot and came out on top. My friends and family helped me get to this point and I still love taking photos for them or even asking them to be a part of my crazy ideas. “Trust the process” became my motto and they all know that great things will come if they listen to that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a mom of three boys who got into photography about seven years ago. I have always been an artistic person and when I had my oldest it just felt right to pick up my camera and document his milestones. With lots of practice and asking questions and watching videos and reading things fell into place. As time went by I got to practice on my friends and their kids and create little themes and just have a lot of fun with that. Years later I went through a divorced and moved across the country with my kids and a dog. I knew then I needed to take my photography to a new level. I began to create a portfolio and get clients and make magic happen. Currently I am in school full time for graphic design and still doing photography almost full time. I normally do family, kids, and couples photos. I absolutely adore kids photography because not only are they super cute, there is so many different things we can do. Themed birthday shoots are absolutely amazing and so much fun. I am so proud of all my clients for having faith in me to deliver photos they love and for working with me to create visions brought to life.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been social media. Being in mom groups and having former clients refer me has been my main source of new clients. I love reaching out to people and seeing if we are a good fit.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love creating new things. The most rewarding thing for me is being able to create a vision and bring that to life. I love that my clients trust me and work with me to make this happen.
