We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justyn Fox . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justyn below.
Justyn , appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I feel one of the major things that my parents did right was giving me a lot of freedom as I was growing up. My mom ironically describes me as having gone through “phases of obsessions”. What she was saying is that I had periods of intense dedication to several different things as I was growing up. I was a National and State champion in Sporting clays, fell in love with archery, played multiple sports, spent as many hours a day as possible playing guitar(one day 14 hours), and things such as weightlifting, hunting, and more. They never gave me restrictions on what I had access to or not(as long as it was not detrimental to my mental or physical health). With that freedom came many mistakes, but it also formed inside of me an intuition and internal motivation that cannot be taken away by external circumstances. This resolve has been tested several times in my life, and I always fall back to this internal space of safety and personal reflection. They allowed me to try and fail without a safety net(unless my life could be endangered…duh), and this in turn allowed me to see my personal tolerance for risk, my internal motivations(without external input), and what really made my life make sense to me.. Just like anyone else and their parents, we had our disagreements, but I applaud my parents for their ability to hear what I had to say even if they may not have agreed or understood.
Justyn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started playing guitar when I was 14, but ironically was obsessed with it at age 12. My high school friends introduced me to Guitar hero and that same year my mother got me the Guns n Roses record “Appetite for Destruction”. Needless to say my life was changed for good! I knew that I wanted to play guitar, and potentially write music, but I did not know how to get there! I have performed live music since I was 19 working odd and end jobs to fill in days that people do not book music. in 2019, during the peak of Covid 19 my gigging slowed down immensely and I needed to find another way to make money with music. To add to my concern, my 1st daughter was on the way and I need to support my family,,,,and FAST!
I was blessed to have several people share that I was interested in starting guitar lessons, and within 24 hours I had 7 students booked for the following week. Fast forward to today, and I rotate between 15-20 students depending on school and sport conflicts.
I think one of the main things that sets me apart from other people in my industry is that I am in love with both the creative and technical aspects of music and its production. I went to school for Audio technology in Production, while receiving minors in music composition and Jazz guitar. I feel that I see the world of music from a rainbow lens and not black and white. Music is meant to inspire, and change peoples lives. It is a universal language that transcends many barriers set by man. When approaching students, I feel it is best to take them case by case, as their end goals may be different. This method will allow the students motivation to drive lessons, rather than a rigid curriculum.
My longterm goals are to provide more inspiring and creative original music and digestible music information on my social and private channels. My hope is that this will increase the overall creativity of the local music community, and hopefully attract others that have the same goal so that we can collaborate and inspire even more people to play and write music!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative to me is that I am able to take my thoughts, opinions, and emotions and present them in a well crafted, potentially engaging piece of art. I view each song, riff, or video that I create as a small step on the lifelong path of being a Lifer musician, One of the benefits of using art is that the artist can transcend their personal emotions in a moment, and that art could potentially help others do the same. Music education is no different in my eyes. As an instructor, my job is to walk the small steps with the students in their musical journey and show them ways to improve, things I wish I knew along the way, or inspire creative thinking!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My long term goal is to constantly push my creative edge in my writing and recording, and to simplify musical ideas with my instruction to the point that anyone from any background can understand and apply their knowledge to create or play music!
