We recently connected with Justyn Campbell and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Justyn, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning all that I know surely took lots of trial and error. If I knew what I know now, I feel that I would have a lot more clarity on the things that took me much time to understand. The skill that I find most essential to my career in content creation is the ability to network. As a content creator, you meet many people who love the same things as you and have similar passions. You must be willing to learn from the people you encounter and be able to work with people in your field. Being a creator also requires lots of time, editing, and creativity. These are crucial for keeping high social media engagements and interaction. For my modeling career, an essential mastery is confidence. Confidence is truly key, and it helps us to create a positive mindset and develop a stronger sense of self-love. Once you love yourself unconditionally and are confident in all that you bring to the table, you are inevitably able to perfect your craft. Another important skill in the modeling industry is staying consistent with the fundamental modeling techniques. Over time, models will lose focus on the basics.
In acting, I would say that the most important skill would be learning the role of your character. Being able to portray a role with pure skill means that you must be able to venture outside your comfort zone and “become” your character.
The obstacle that stood in the way of me learning more, is the lack of time management. I often find that I may have plenty of time, but do not always utilize it in productive ways. Worrying about money can also be a hindrance as it can get in the way of investing in your own knowledge, I feel that often times we are so focused on that “hustle” of constantly getting money that we may sway from taking time to learn the basics of investment and planning for our careers.
The overall process of growing into the person we wish to be and being the best at all that we do can be very tedious at times, but behind every successful person is a meaningful story. I believe that learning from our mistakes, managing time wisely, and having lots of practice and preparation is ultimately the remedy to our success.
Justyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Justyn Campbell, also known as JFettiHoncho, and I’m a Social Media Influencer, Model, and Actor. After a devastating sports injury during high school, I was physically unable to play football for the rest of my high school career. This was one of the hardest moments in my life. Since I no longer had football, I turned to gaming as a way to get my mind off of losing something I loved. I noticed my skill in gaming, specifically in the game NBA 2K, and decided to do content creation on YouTube. After years of gaming, It slowly became less enjoyable to me. I decided to venture out into doing public interviews and entertaining skits on other social media platforms since I understood that I am more than just a gamer. I have now worked with so many talented content creators in my field and gained a combined over one hundred thousand views on all platforms. What sets me apart is my creativity. I create content that not only puts a smile on someone’s face but something that is different. My modeling career began with an organization at my college, Georgia State University, known as Infinite Appeal. They taught me the basic fundamentals of modeling and how to be successful in the industry. I have been a runway model for a year and a freelance model for 2 years. I currently walked in over 10 fashion shows, participated in New York Fashion Week for the first time, and worked with so many talented designers. What sets me apart as a model is my confidence and body physique. Nobody looks nor walks like me on the runway.
I was into acting ever since I was a kid. I never fully got into it because of sports and gaming. But after I was on set with Chris Lee and Jacob Latimore for their music video as a featured actor, I decided to pursue acting more. Today, I have now been a featured actor in 2 movies, both to be released in theaters, and 2 shows, one on Netflix. All, except one, will be released in the upcoming year, 2023. What separates me apart from other actors is how well I adapt to playing a role and the positive energy I exert while being on set. I enjoy taking on the challenge of portraying someone else and living their life while also being that positive person filled with life on set when everyone has been on set for more than 12 hours.
I am most proud of my overall progress and growth. I have accomplished so much this past year. I will continue to successfully expand my social media platforms and brand. One thing that I can assure my followers, as well as my clients, is that I will always present quality and professionalism in everything that I do. Throughout my journey, I am grateful for everything God has given me thus far and I am excited about everything he has in store for me in the future.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Many non-creatives underestimate the amount of work that goes into being a social media influencer, fashion model, and actor. Social Media Influencers take not only recording a video but the hours it goes into editing the video. Some nights you will stay up 24 hours to record and edit one YouTube video and it might not perform how well you thought it will be. Not to mention, if you are not getting paid, it can take a toll on you to stay consistent considering everything you have going on in life. This can include working a 9 to 5 and/or being a full-time student in college. Being a fashion model, people do not see all the hours spent practicing and money spent to participate in fashion shows in hopes to get signed and obtain paid opportunities. In most fashion shows, models are not paid. And many fashion opportunities are announced last minute, which can be a conflict if you have school or work. Being an actor, there are some days where you are required to be on set for 15 hours and are given only breakfast and dinner and most likely will not be paid from that workday in 2 weeks minimum, subject to be longer. Many people do not understand this struggle that comes with trying to do what I do. There will be many long nights where you may not eat and/or have a negative bank account. It is a tough journey, but anything worthwhile in life has obstacles. You may sometimes feel discouraged. But having overwhelming confidence and belief, you can make something happen.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience from just being myself. Some people are confused about how to build a loyal audience but honestly, it comes from being yourself. People going to like you for you. Some people going to hate you. That just comes with the game. I learned a quote from the late Nipsey Hussle that I have been following since High School is to “define who you are and what you are, and be clear on that.” That stuck with me because it is true and it will get you further than you will ever know.
