We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justine Nord a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justine, appreciate you joining us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
I had these flyers made that had my phone number across the bottom that people could tear off. There was a little description of what I did and some photos and I used these flyers to tape up in all the Porta potties at the horse shows. The morning of the show I would tape up all my flyers in every porta potty and then hang out at the show all day and wait for a text or phone call. And I got a lot of business that way. It was very rewarding and grassroots effort. That’s how I got my start and then soon I was getting referrals.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a horsey girl since I was a little kid. I got my first pony when I turned 12 and I was hooked. Being around Horses, riding, showing, enjoying every second with them has been a part of my life since I can remember. It felt only natural to me to get into an occupation that involved them. I wanted to create a job for myself that allowed me to be in their presence and I would never feel like I was working. Eventually, I met someone who mentored me and certified me in the art of equine massage. She is a dear friend to this day.
The majority of my Equine clients are performance horses riding in the disciplines of dressage or jumping. I provide soreness assessments, and I help the rider create awareness with their horse and their body. Along with the massage portion, I provide cold laser therapy to the horse after I have finished working on them with my hands. These modalities put together allow the horses a faster recovery time from training soreness as they develop their strength. According to my riders, their horses feel more supple and freer in their movement after a session. I love watching my clients ride and I’m honored that my work helps support them in their equine journey.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe in utmost integrity, good communication and consistency have been the keys to my success in my industry. My clients horses are in a specific program with me. That allows me constant communication with them, letting them know when their Horses session is and how the session went and, keeping the horses on a program that allows them the utmost success. My business has grown from continuous referrals.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Yes, I would! Horses have been my passion for such a long time that it feels so natural for me to be around them and the fact that I get to support such magnificent athletes in the way that I do is very rewarding for me.
