Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Justin , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started Bibbelbubs to solve a problem in my own life.
My kids are great, but there were two areas that were always a struggle. Every night when it came for bath time and bible story time it was always a battle. They simply didn’t want to take a bath so I would spend a ton of energy just getting them into the tub. After working all day and then trying to wrestle them into the bath, I just didn’t have the energy to sit down and read a bible story with them. All I wanted to do was get them in bed so I could relax for a few minutes before going to sleep and doing the same thing all over again the next day.
I tried using bath bombs with surprise toys inside to get them excited about bath time, and it worked! Now, I finally had the energy and motivation to read them a bible story. They would always argue about which story to read. My youngest son wanted to read the story of David and Goliath every single night and this drove my older son crazy.
That’s when the idea hit me. What if I combined bath bombs and bible stories? I thought, how could would it be to have a toy inside the bath bomb that goes along with a specific bible story?
I immediately started searching for a Bible Story Bath Bomb set online but found nothing.
I realized if I wanted Bible Story Bath Bombs, I was going to have to make them myself. So I did.
Most of my friends have young children too and I knew that we weren’t the only parents with this same problem. If this would radically change nighttime for our family, it could also help other Christian families all over the country.
The thought of starting a business that was inherently good and also able to solve a real problem for parents was incredibly exciting for me. I could visualize all the families snuggled up on the couch after bath time reading bible stories together and I knew I had to do this.
Justin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Justin Wright. I have had a wonderful career as a photographer, but I have also always had some side business going. I had an online photography training site, a mobile photo booth called Photobusters, and a Nashville inspired t-shirt brand.
These were all fun and I learned a lot, but something was always missing.
My true dream was to create a business that had a positive impact on the world in a very tangible and immediate way. I honestly believe God had me in training camp with all those other business experiments and I am finally in the place He has been preparing me for.
I had never done something this big before. I had to find a way to write and illustrate a children’s book. Design, source, and bring a brand new product to market. Figure out how to sell on Amazon. Learn how to build a brand and so much more. If this was going to become a reality, God really had to show up because I had no idea what I was doing.
It has been amazing to see him open so many doors and walk beside me every step of the way. Nothing about this has been easy, but if it was, it wouldn’t be the adventure that it has been. When you truly need God to show up in very real ways, it’s a huge opportunity to deepen your relationship with him and see how much he really cares about all the little things.
I am most proud of having made it this far. It’s fun to have a big dream. It takes courage, grit, and faith to consistently do all the little things you need to do to make it a reality. The fact that Bibbelbubs exist is a testament to God’s faithfulness, evidence that he cares about our dreams, and will walk along side us to bring them to fruition.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There have been so many situations that made me second guess myself or the business idea. It’s hard to share just one that one to help encourage others to stick it out when things are tough.
Here’s one of the big issues I ran into.
I decided to start selling on Amazon and also use them as my fulfillment for my Shopify store. I created the listing, sent the product into Amazon successfully, and had the listing up and live with no problems…for two days. Here I was with plans to place to launch my business to the world on a schedule and the listing gone.
Out of nowhere, Amazon took my listing down. No email notification. No warnings. Just gone.
I literally spent 3 full days on the phone with Amazon trying to resolve the issues which they admitted was a technical error on their part. It came down to one little listing error in an excel sheet that needed to be changed for a random reason. We finally got my product listed again but it was under the wrong category. It took another 2 days and several phone calls to get that changed too.
The takeaway I have learned from all the problems I have encountered is this: Things are going to go wrong. You should hope for the best, but expect bad situations and circumstances to come. The obstacle is often the way. You learn so much more from the hardships and struggles than you do from everything just working out. Every problem you encounter will take more time than you want to resolve, but you will be one step closer to creating the solid business you desire.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
You never know what could happen when you put yourself and your product out in the world. There has never been a better time to launch a business because it has never been easier to find and build a community of like minded people. It has been a slow grind with one lucky break for me.
I have a friend that texted me. She was taking a gift to her friend that just had a baby. Her friend also had two older boys, so my friend asked if I could bring over some bath bomb sets and Bubbee the Bear stuffed animals that night so she could give them to her friend the next day.
It turns out her friend had a big instagram following…750,000 followers. They also happened to be my target demographic. Two instagram stories of her friend sharing Bibbelbubs lead to 350 orders and 2,200 new followers. It was a huge boost but things eventually leveled out and I need to grind again.
I started posting on TikTok. TikTok is the best place to be right now in my opinion for reaching new potential customers that will connect with your product. The formula that works for me is: Hook, story, solution, and offer. Honestly, I never know what video is going to take off. I had one video hit over 25k views which lead to a good amount of sales and about 1,200 followers. Hitting that 1k followers is huge because you can go live at that point.
I wouldn’t worry about posting on TikTok every single day. Create good content that serves, encourages, or entertains your ideal customer community. Visualize the person that could benefit from your business/product and ask: How can I serve that person today? Then make a video.
