We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justin Taylor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justin below.
Justin, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?
I started taking photography seriously when I met D. Lacy. He was a photographer by whom I was truly inspired. From the creative concepts I’d see, to the mindfulness that he displayed in everything he posted on social media. One of the most valuable things he told me was “You’re never going to make every client happy.” For a while, I was baffled because I always wanted to make sure my clients were satisfied. It wasn’t until I had my first unhappy client where I fully understood what he meant. I talked to him about it, and he told me: “You did everything you could to make them happy with the information and circumstances they gave you. You did nothing wrong. Some clients will just not be happy no matter what you do.” Ever since that day, I made it a point to do whatever I could to satisfy my clients, but not beat myself up about it when things didn’t go as expected. I learned from the experience and kept moving forward in becoming a better photographer.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started off doing video and enjoyed the green screen effects. It wasn’t too long after that I realized I didn’t have a passion for it. I decided to take photos for an event one day and instantly felt like this is what I’m supposed to be doing. I thoroughly enjoyed capturing lifetime moments of people and events. It puts a smile on my face when someone can look back in time at a photo I’ve taken and reminisce on that moment. From that point forward, I was beyond excited and anxious to learn more about photography so that I could improve my skills. I feel that the quality and the speed of service I provide is what sets me apart from others. You can always expect me to be professional and provide a fun environment during your photo session. I’d like my potential clients, followers, and fans to know that I take pride in my brand Taylor Media Photography. You can be rest assured that I have your best interest at heart and will deliver quality that will exceed your expectations. As your photographer, you can count on me to answer any questions that you may have, give you direction when it comes to posing and give you peace of mind with any doubts you may have.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The first initial capital I needed to start my business came from my savings account. I bought my first camera and lens to go with it. I was extremely nervous to see so much money leave my account all at once, but I had to keep telling myself that it was an investment and the money will be made back to cover it.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
To be honest, my audience on social media was built on word of mouth from my clients. One of the questions I always ask my first-time clients is how they found me. Most of the time I was told that they either found my work scrolling through social media with my logo posted on pictures or they received recommendations from family or friends.
