Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin Suico. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Justin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I sat down next to a fiercely dedicated woman of Syrian descent at a nearby coffee shop. There she was alone, nestled in the corner with a cup of coffee, as she awaited my arrival. She was one of the organizers for a nonprofit in Chicago called, KARAM. Where their mission is to determine and redefine what it means to be a refugee. To help Syrian youth harness their ambition and creativity, so they can define themselves not by what they’ve survived, but where they’re going.
We discussed an opportunity for a one day event to teach emotional intelligence through art. After weeks of careful planning, the day arrived, and we were greeted by the bright eyes and smiles of a group of wonderful children whose families journey consisted of a torrent of adversity and hardships.
We began by sitting everyone in a circle, introducing ourselves. Which lead to inclusive games, creative writing about their heroes, and painting about a brighter hopeful future. Each moment was designed to bring awareness to learning how to communicate and that there were other ways to be heard. The most meaningful part of all of this was the hopeful eyes that left that day, inspired, encouraged, and heard. Although it was only for one day, I like to think we made a small difference in positively influencing a better future for those kids, their family and community.

Justin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Justin Suico. I am an artist from Chicago, IL. Currently pioneering the Art of Emotional Intelligence movement. My paintings have been shown all over Chicago, in Miami’s Art Basel, London’s famous London Tower Bridge, and in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. My work is a commentary on today’s current emotional affairs. Focusing on the subtleties of emotion through body language, color and subject matter.
I find the human condition inspiring, sensual, and devastating in equal measure. We all have a story to tell and I am often left in reverent awe to those who share it. With each story comes a lesson bearing the gifts of compassion and empathy, illuminating the recesses of the heart. With an affinity towards psychology, neuroscience and philosophy; I create visual exposés on the modern soul.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The unique creative ability to push and challenge the boundaries of conventional thinking, leading the vanguard forward and shining light into the world of mental health while educating the modern soul in the process.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to encourage self-reflection and in turn express compassion for one another through open discussion, art and culture.
