We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Short a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My name is Justin Short and the story of why I am running for office is a long one but it is sure exciting! Being born and raised in the Northland of Kansas City my father was an elected official and my mother ran a major non profit in Kansas City! This allowed to to experience public service as a duty. I have always been inherently interested in KCMO politics and what the city has become, from a desolate downtown to a thriving community, we have an incredible opportunity to expand on the work that has been done of the past 20 years to make our city an incredible place to live. I was appointed to the LGTBQ commission in 2020 and took a nosedive into the local politics scene, through that and MANY conversations with stakeholders and current local leaders, I came to the decision to run for local office.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Justin Short I am running for the 4th District at Large Seat for Kansas City Missouri, City Council!
My website is justinshortforkc.com
Our Campaign believes we can change our city in the following ways.
- Development: Getting Kansas City back Open For Business
- Transportation: Enhancing and supporting our regional transit authority to provide opportunities for improved multi modal transit.
- Neighborhoods: Neighborhoods are a vastly underutilized resource in our city.
- Small Business Support: Supporting our small business innovation centers to provide low barrier opportunities for startup and innovation.
- Non-Profits: Non-Profits provide essential city services and without them we cannot possibly hope to serve our city on the whole.
- Climate Action: We have a duty to protect our city for future citizens.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Continuously showing up for community meetings, neighborhood meetings, city events, city meetings, municipal gatherings has been an absolutely essential part of our campaign , I am going to everything I can and it is being noticed and has worked for us!
Social media is also a big part of this, we are having so much fun at these events, why not show the community what we are up to and how we are learning.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This is a very interesting question. Campaigning while working full time is absolutely wild. I am having meetings in the morning, during my lunch break and during the evenings. My weekends are full of events and spending time in the community. I have two full time jobs and that takes a lot of energy. I just keep telling myself the work is worth it and that it will all work out. The work is absolutely worth it.
