Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Justin P. Slaughter . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Justin P. , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Not one successful person achieved success by playing it safe.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Justin P. Slaughter and I am an American Actor known for “90 Feet From Home”, “Meteor” & “Egress”. Some know me from being a double in “Godzilla: King of The Monsters”; though those are notable projects, my resume consists of over 20 projects. I am an Executive Producer at IAJ Media, a production company based in Bellingham, WA though I live in Texas; I travel back and forth. The same company that produced the Sci-Fi Adventure “Egress” and other original contents.
I got into the film industry by starting off as a background actor (Extra) way before climbing into the position I’m in now. Being a background actor is something I recommend to anyone who’s curious about getting their foot in the door. It’ll teach you how to follow directions, have good work ethics, the ins and outs of being on a real film/tv set. It also breaks the ice of nervousness because it can be exhilarating.
One of the biggest hurdles about the Film/Tv industry are locations and finances, believe it or not there’s a lot of people who would want to have a job in this industry rather if it’s being a part of a cast or crew. Your friend, family member, spouse or significant maybe one of these people but never spoke about it because of the difficulties. It’s hard and almost impossible if you’re in a location that doesn’t cater to that genre of work. It’s even harder if your area of location doesn’t even offer funding for that type of work because the are doesn’t think it serves as an asset to the area.
However, there are organizations that understands that issues and are banding together to make a difference in creating a solution to that problem. In Texas, we have an organization called “Good For Texas”, it helped increase film funding from $40 million to $200 million. With the amount of help from them, us at IAj Media can now proceed with our plans to bring filming to Southeast Texas and help those aspiring local actors, actress, filmmakers to get their foot in the door by having a job in our Feature Film.
It doesn’t stop there though, having additional Investors attached can definitely speed up the process of getting the train of success moving.
Which is one the reason why us at IAJ Media is doing an Exclusive screening for 3 episodes of Egress. “Redemption”, “The Rattlesnake” and “Dead In The Water” on November 18th at The Jefferson Theater in Beaumont, TX. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com, you can scan the QR code on the poster or tap on the link at the end of this article. The synopsis to one of the episodes “The Rattlesnake”: A young sicario responsible for missing townsfolk is the next bounty target for Adam Huxley who returns for an all new episode of Egress: The Rattlesnake.
Whereas “Redemption” synopsis is After a dangerous criminal raids a medical facility on Jupiter, a bounty hunter tracks her down to a quarantined desert moon. The mission carries a heavy price.
Hosting it in the Beaumont area is a big deal. The city is in Southeast Texas along with Port Arthur and the areas has mainly been a petrochemical industry. While that is phenomenal, it does dim the dreams and opportunities of anything else to thrive in the area.
This Triple Feature event will shed light on what would be in store for the future of Film/Tv in that area. Especially since a couple months ago, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared Beaumont, TX as a Texas Film Friendly Community meaning that The Texas Film Commission can contribute to the projects that happens in that area. Port Arthur, TX is another Southeastern area that too is a Texas Film Friendly Community. It’s time to utilize the incentives for the sake of the community and make use of this opportunity.
Having a choice to be in the Film/Tv industry should be considered just like any other job and should be funded the same way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Succeeding after going through the trenches, the struggles, dealing with adversity along the way. In all honesty, I don’t think I would appreciate being an artist or creative as much without the struggle to get there. I can truly say that I’ve earned it. You can’t get from A to Z without going through BCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXY because when you go through it all, it’ll mold you into the person that you need to be.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal is to help bring filming to Southeast Texas, making the market thrive but on a scale that would rival other film markets like Georgia and California.
