We were lucky to catch up with Justin Murta recently and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes, I have been able to earn a full time living from my creative work. It was hard for me, because there is not really a clear blue print to making that happen. I had an opportunity that at least covered cost of living and travel as we perfected our performances. It was very hard in the beginning, but once you are liberated from one career and find your path in the new, more opportunities started presenting themselves. Our first major milestone, was simply making it past the first leg of our first “tour” and then the next step was making it to the next year. I don’t think we really could have sped up the process, especially at that time. If we had the resources we have today, we would have been able to become more successful, quicker.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Justin Murta.. I am a professional DJ. I started out as a rapper and had success in the music industry in that art form. I created a company called the HipHop Handbook and tour consistently with that showcase for nearly 5 years. I found more opportunities as a DJ, then a rapper so I began learning that art form and crafting my art around that. After 6 years in Asia and performing and touring abroad, I returned to the United States, where I am considered one of the top DJ’s on the West Coast of the United States. I have held many awesome residencies all over the world in my time as a DJ and very proud of my performances and the music I produce. Today, I am still performing, touring, speaking and producing music across the world.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I always find a way to adapt and overcome.. When I needed a way to cost effetely tour, I created a program that was embraced by academia. When the financial crisis hit and shut down many programs like mine, I found opportunities in Asia. When the US economy picked up, I moved back to enjoy performances back home and when Covid hit, I learned how to DJ virtually.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to teach, entertain and share my creativity with my family, friends and fans.
