We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Meeks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I decided to create my own business structure after years of working of other brands and people. I became very intrigued at the concept while making other brands expand and thrive / training and educating others in the beauty industry and beyond .
Justin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I Started in the beauty space around 2008 being fascinated and very into skincare and fragrances and the wellness space as a whole from a young age. I originally was a fine art major but that took a turn when i realized my passion and focus was in makeup and beyond !
My journey started at Aveda in 2009 where i studied the art and science of skincare . It took be through the aryuvedic approach of skincare and makeup . Everything was based on plants science and circling back to the planet instead of synthetics and mainstream practices. I loved studying fragrances as well as product development and ingredients which would inspire me to eventually create my apothecary .
The core of creating jmeeksapothecary LLC was to combine my love of esthetics and my apothecary brand under one umbrella . So the skincare side where i see my clients is the spa in person side . The apothecary is the candles , incense and fragrance side . Together they are both within my umbrella and my creations . I hope to inspire my customers to create rituals for themselves and truly take the time to nurture and focus on oneself.
Both my brands focus on the ways of the past and sheds much light on the cultures and creators Behind the tools and products that i use and or create . I am so in love with creating and experience for our customers .
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think passion and drive ! Having your own business is a journey and a never ending learning experience. You have to focus on your goals and be smart about how you achieve them . The passion and drive is the key motivator to why you’re doing what you’re doing.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think my ability to be adaptable and an all around people person is what helps me thrive most . I have always loved working with people or on people . So being able to network and build great relationships is key .
