We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Isaac a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?

Becoming a full-time commercial photographer has been a journey filled with challenges and growth. It wasn’t a straightforward path, but rather a gradual progression that required years of dedication and hard work. Initially, I juggled various roles on photo and film sets while simultaneously building my portfolio whenever time allowed. Despite the occasional struggle, I cherished every moment of this experience, as it exposed me to diverse shooting styles and subject matters.

Transitioning from assisting roles to establishing myself as a commercial photographer took patience and persistence. It took around 3 to 5 years to reach a point where photography became my primary source of income. However, even then, I never felt like I had “made it.” The entrepreneurial drive compelled me to constantly seek new opportunities and challenges, echoing the sentiment I once witnessed in a corporate CEO who, despite achieving success, was already looking ahead to the next venture.

Reflecting on my journey, I realize the significance of the learning process. Without formal education in photography, I relied on my passion, basic technical knowledge, and willingness to learn. Each experience, whether it was mastering a new lighting technique or forging connections within the industry, contributed to my growth as a photographer and entrepreneur.

Networking played a crucial role in my journey. Building relationships with industry professionals was as essential as honing technical skills. These connections not only opened doors to new opportunities but also fostered a sense of community and support within the creative realm.

Looking back, I wouldn’t trade the gradual progression and the invaluable lessons learned along the way for a shortcut. The journey to success in a creative field is unique for each individual, shaped by experiences, perseverance, and the relationships forged along the way.
