We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justin Guidroz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’m currently working on a series of short films, the most important to me is “The Drive Back”, a short queer film that won best screenplay at a few film festivals. After a long drought of not writing, it was my first piece to generate a good bit of interest from readers as well as producers. I loved being able to craft a compelling story with zero dialogue that translates as well on paper as I hope it will on screen.
Justin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been working creatively in a professional capacity since I was quite young, starting as an actor on stage. Over time, I started to step off stage to focus on producing and directing stage plays, as well as writing, and recently I have been pivoting towards film and potential prose.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When I was younger and working, I was told to invest all of my time and energy into every project, and to relentlessly pursue what people expected of me. As a result, although I didn’t see it until I stepped off the train, I had lost any real inspiration and creative drive, and was accepting projects because that’s what I did. Only when I stopped did I realize that I need to spend my energy correctly, have discernment, and follow inspiration rather than a number of projects.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to make films that others will truly connect with. I see so many films and products that were seemingly just made to be made, and I want to make something that viewers feel valued their time and enriched them in some way.
