We recently connected with Justin Goodrum and have shared our conversation below.
Justin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
In 2009 I graduated from the University of New Mexico (UNM) and two friends decided to create a podcast called The Low Blow. All three of us would talk about fighting before class began and when we graduated decided to create a podcast. I’m originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and combat sports are a huge part of the culture. Podcasting was still fairly new in 2009 so we would meet in person on UNM’s college campus to record our shows. We recorded one to two shows a week covering the most popular news and then transitioned to interviewing various fighters and journalists. At first, we launched the show on our own and then partnered with FightFans Radio and UScombatsports with the purpose of additional exposure.
Justin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico to parents who have retired from the educational field. My mother worked in special education and my dad was a band director. Their background of teaching others was passed down to me as I enjoyed teaching others. I look a liking to technology but my passion lies within sports and journalism. I wrote for my school newspaper in high school and college and eventually began writing for freelance publications after I graduated. I’m most proud of the way I’m able to adapt to situations, create new content, and collaborate with others. Currently I’m a freelance journalist and the co-host of the Hoopsology Podcast. Hoopsology was relaunched in 2020 to cover the NBA and WNBA with a focus on basketball culture.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had known the value of LinkedIn earlier. The platform is a great resource to learn, connect, and spread the word about my content creation. It’s not polluted with meaningless ads and irrelevant information and I usually learn something new and productive by reading other posts from LinkedIn members.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Even though the hype around NFTs has somewhat faded I still see a lot of potential. Since I cover sports I noticed various sports leagues jump on the bandwagon. Sports NFTs offer enough difference that I believe there is value in collecting them. I’m by no means an NFT expert but I do see how they can offer the casual sports fan a unique experience compared to traditional collectibles.
