We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justin Flores . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justin below.
Hi Justin , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I stated my company, Justified Media as an alternative to today’s clickbait driven / clout chasing media platforms that are breaking news and reporting on gossip. Justified Media’s mission is to educate those on the music industry and music theory and to challenge those to think deeply on how music affects society.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a radio DJ, host, producer, and booking agent and I received my Master’s of Arts in Music Industry Administration at California State University, Northridge. I got into to the industry as a journalist / media personality interviewing acts such as Snoop Dogg, The Game, TLC, and Naughty By Nature. I started my radio show “The GR8-L8 Show” on the legacy Hip-Hop group, The Pharcyde’s “Pharcyde TV,” in 2018 and would eventually take the show to 101.5 FM KQBH in 2020 which I still host and DJ on.
I have been active in the industry since 2016 and I have seen how drastic the industry changes. The mission of the media platform is to report on the nuances, trends, and changes taking place in real-time in order to help independent artists, workers, and creatives thrive and have longevity in the industry.
I think what sets my company and I apart is everything comes the heart and is all calculated. Every time I speak on the mic I always make sure I’ve conducted research and I am saying something important. I don’t like to waste words. I treat public speaking life martial arts, I only speak when necessary and to add value. I speak to enlighten, to educate, and to make people think.
The main thing I’m proud of his I’ve been able to reinvent myself, remain independent, and have longevity. I broke into the L.A. music scene in 2011 and to be here making strides and establishing myself is a blessing.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time I had to pviot was last year. I started a DJ series on Tik Tok and Instagram Reels called “Blends By Muzack” and at times I would get the music muted or content taken down due to using copyrighted music. I started a new series called “Hot-Takes” where I give my honest opinions on what’s going on in the music industry. I created the show build community and to have an open forum where we discuss the nuances and trends taking place in the music industry. I have 11 episodes and it reached over 10k views. The show is completely written, shot, and edited by me. All the background music is mine as well. I wrote and composed every episode. I learned that my voice and my opinions matter and I don’t need copyrighted material for people to engage with my content.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is thinking that I need to become a media personality or a radio host on a major outlet or platform. I spent a good portion of my career on independent outlets trying to groom myself for my “Big Break!” As the media industry continues to focus on celebrity hosted content, it makes it harder for someone “grassroots” to get on a major platform. I’ve learned to start my own and become a business owner. I have learned that I won’t have to talk about or report on things I’m uneducated, or misinformed on, or uninterested in. I can do things my way and build a fan base that way. It’s been a process but I am happy I have unlearned this idea of “Getting signed” in order to validate my career.
