We recently connected with Justin F and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Justin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I lost my father to suicide when I was 3, so my mother had to raise my and brother and me all on her own. As I got older, I was able to understand the sacrifices she had to make to raise us. She was incredibly independent and fearless by default. Even though we didn’t have much, she always made sure we had everything we needed. She was dealt a really bad hand in the game of life when it came to loosing my father. There’s no rule book on how you’re supposed to handle loosing your husband and on top of that you have to still raise two young boys all by yourself. Seeing her do that without missing a beat, taught me that you can overcome anything. She always believed in my career as a musician, even at times when I didn’t. In the music business you have to be incredibly fearless and willing to make sacrifices, and I got those traits thankfully from my mother.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From my earliest memory, I can always remember listening to music with my grandparents and singing songs with them. I can’t remember a day where music didn’t play a part in my life. When I first heard Billy Joel, I knew right away I wanted to write songs that played a part in people’s lives as his songs did. Billy Joel has this incredible way of writing songs where no matter what you’re going through in your life at that moment, you can listen to one his songs and it’s like he’s singing about exactly what you’re dealing with. I started writing words and coming up with melodies that weren’t very good at all when I was about 14. After that I learned to play guitar so I could improve my songwriting. Performing at open stages in my hometown of Dormont led to joining my first band, called “3AM”. We were a party band and all the other members were 20 and 30 years older than me. I learned a lot from those guys, but it was only a matter of time till I branched out wanting to record and perform my own songs. I’ve been very fortunate, I’ve been signed to a label, had songs and albums on the charts, and even toured with some of the biggest names in Country and Pop music. And I’m just getting started!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding for me is any time someone tells me that one of my songs has impacted their life in a certain way. That and every time someone spends their hard earned money to buy one of my concert tickets or albums.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As a musician, you have to develop tough skin. 9 out 10 times you’re gonna be told no or you’re not good enough. If I listened to everyone who ever told me no or you can’t do that, I sure in hell wouldn’t be where I am today. You can do anything you want to, who the hell is anyone to tell you, you can’t.
