We were lucky to catch up with Justin Dixson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Justin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story with us from back when you were an intern or apprentice? Maybe it’s a story that illustrates an important lesson you learned or maybe it’s a just a story that makes you laugh (or cry)?

Importance of mentorship- someone to ask for advice/guidance
I was an electrical pre apprentice and learned from some good teachers
Now the owner of the shop I cut hair at has been in barber business 20 plus years . Never met him before I graduated but he never fails to help/advise in situations even those that do not deal with barbering.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Justin Dixson, KC born and raised. HonestlY got into the cutting later in life but i enjoy making people feel good about themselves. Confidence is key. I provide haircuts , steam facials, eyebrow arch and beard treatments. But I’m more than just the guy cutting your hair behind the chair. I’m a listener, friend, sidekick, therapist, etc behind that chair. I have to be an active listener to not only understand what my client wants hair wise but just also know that they just don’t pay me to cut and kick them out p, we build friendships.

Have you ever had to pivot?

I used to think I would end up playing professional basketball or my life would involve sports. One reason or another I couldn’t get to that but I’m was looking for different ways to still impact people and not just athletes. It was nerve wracking at first cause I had no experience or knowledge about hair. But you have to take a chance on yourself and strive for greatness all around.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

For me word of mouth and people see the work (haircuts ) I’ve done. Once I do a cut I post on my business page. The client takes pictures feeling good and then they are a walking billboard
